The BAFTAs really aren't a precursor for anything. Carey Mulligan and Colin Firth won only because they are British, and because they were Oscar-nominated. The BAFTAs would award British people every year if they could - they were lucky this year that two British actors turned in universally acclaimed performances, so that they could award them without seeming biased.

Carey Mulligan wins legions of fans with every talk show appearance . She is utterly charming and appears to be very grounded. She is also extremely talented and her role as Jenny was a star making role. I believe that the American vote will be split and this wonderful new talent will be thrust into the forefront of American celebrity. I also believe that she will prove to be worthy of the honor.

What polls are you referring to because all of the ones I have seen have Sandra Bullock winning by a wide margin including IMDB's oscar poll, moviefone, and of course this one (not to mention a few others). Sandra gave an excellent performance, she truly captured Leigh Anne Touhy, whereas Meryl gave an over the top performance,(sadly the movie was mediocre). If she wins for this performance it will be a travesty of the worst kind. Also, I think Dan Akyryod did a better job of being Julia Child on Saturday Night Live than Meryl did in the movie.

come on!
the reson meryl was in the lead in the other poll here on goldderby was that the question then was: who SHOULD win ( that's obviosly not sandra)
now the question is who IS going to win? and that might be sandra! sadly...
and if she does it's gonna be the most undeserving win in the AMPAS hisory!
yes she did a great job as Ann leigh but compared to meryl she shouldn't even be nominated! not even hardcore sandra fans can say that she did a finer job than meryl or ANY of the other in the actresses nominated for the oscar!
and again if she wins, it's just because of her good box office year NOT the preforamce!
And just to let you guys know i do not hate sandra, i actually like her movies and funny personality but her winning an oscar is just wrong!!!!!

Meryl Streep leads clearly in another vote, which was released earlier on this site!
It was a vote who should be the Best Actress. This is a new one. And in severeal other polls on other websites Streep leads the vote!

I hope Sandra wins the Academy Award not because "she's paid her dues" but because she deserves it. I find it terribly sad that ignorant people continue to bash her. She did an excellent job in the film for which she is nominated and in my humble opinion deserves to take the Oscar. All of you who have nothing better to do but degrade others, you need to get a life. If Sandra wins the Oscar, it will not be the end of the world (according to those who bash her). On the contrary, I think it will only serve to enhance the academy's reputation for selecting fine performances.

Emm vegasgirl ? Why does Sandra Bullock not deserve to win it, as you can see she is leading in the vote so other people clearly disagree :L

Much as I like Carey Mulligan and have been a fan since seeing her in Doctor Who, I have my doubts that she'll be able to pull an upset at the Oscars. Assuming the nationalities of the nominees are never a factor, Bullock has a lot of "she's paid her dues" momentum going for her, while Meryl Streep seems to get Oscar-nominated every time she opens her mouth, but this time they seem to think she'll get it. However, with so many on Streep's side and so many on Bullock's side, the possibility of a split vote is very real, which would allow Carey - or, frankly, one of the other nominations - to come up the middle.

No offense, but ... Sandra Bullock? I'm sorry. While she has progressed as an actress, in no way, shape or form, is her performance better than the four others. If she wins, that will be just plain wrong.

There is nothing to be read into Mulligan winning the BAFTA. She and Colin Firth won because they are BRITISH, and the BRITISH ACADEMY was awarding them accordingly.

Meryl Streep. If the AMPAS have any sense left in their minds, they'll award the most deserving one. However, if Meryl doesn't win, i want Mulligan to take it.

I'm happy that Carey won the BAFTA but there is no way she can win the Oscar. She deserved the nomination. The Oscar is clearly between Sandra and Meryl.
