Golden Globes TV comedy predix: 'Glee,' 'Modern Family' and ...?

Now that Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Rob Licuria gave us their Golden Globe predix for best TV drama series, let's see how they size up the race for best laffer. Boomer drew up his predix first — see list below. After Rob reviewed the rundown, he said, "I would move 'Raising Hope' up to front-runners and move 'Parks and Recreation' and 'Community' down to possible." Boomer's predix: "The Big C", "Glee," "Modern Family," "Nurse Jackie," "30 Rock." Rob's predix: "The Big Bang Theory," "Glee," "Modern Family," "Nurse Jackie," "30 Rock." "Glee" won last year, of course. * = nominee last year BEST COMEDY SERIES (Front-runners) "The Big Bang Theory" "The Big C" "Community" "Entourage" *...

Gold Derby nuggets: Pond & Hammond: Oscar race recaps | Stone: Oscars for 'Harry Potter'? | Cheers for Matt Damon on '30 Rock'

• Noted Oscarologist Steve Pond begins his savvy survey of the state of the race as follows: "'The King’s Speech' and 'The Social Network' proved their mettle, 'Black Swan' and '127 Hours' stirred up passions, 'The Tree of Life' is officially out of the running, and 'The Conspirator' and 'Conviction' dinted their Oscar chances. With the first round of fall showcases behind us -- Venice, Toronto and Telluride -- and the New York Film Festival set to unveil 'The Social Network' on Friday -- the Oscar picture is clearer. But there’s still room for lots of movement, for favorites to fade and dark horses to come out of nowhere." THE ODDS • Pete Hammond turns...

'Modern Family,' Jim Parsons and, yes, Edie Falco among Emmy comedy newcomers

Freshman hit "Modern Family" won best comedy series as well as supporting actor (Eric Stonestreet) and writing (Steven Levitan & Christopher Lloyd) at this year's Emmy Awards. "Glee," the other breakout show of the TV season, had to settle for supporting actress (Jane Lynch) and directing (Ryan Murphy). The lead acting awards went to Edie Falco for the first season of "Nurse Jackie" and Jim Parsons, who prevailed on his second nomination for "The Big Bang Theory." "Modern Family" joins a long line of classic TV shows to win top comedy series for their first seasons. Among them: "All in the Family" (1971, the first of four wins), "Taxi" (1979, the first of three in...

Emmy pundits' video slugfest: Who'll win best comedy actress?

Most Emmy pundits are betting on Edie Falco ("Nurse Jackie") to win best comedy actress, but we all made the mistake of underestimating Toni Collette ("United States of Tara") last year. Voters of all showbiz awards are suckers for roles featuring multiple personalities. And what about past champ Tina Fey, who gave Emmy judges one of her best-ever episodes of "30 Rock"? We also pooh-poohed Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("New Adventures of Old Christine") in the past, but she got the last laugh. Oh, yeah, and then there are media darlings Amy Poehler ("Parks and Recreation") and Lea Michele ("Glee"). After seeing this video, check out the links below to our other pundit video slugfests covering other...

Will 'Modern Family' end winning streak for '30 Rock' at the Emmys?

Rob Licuria (AwardsHeaven) and Chris "Boomer" Beachum both believe that "Modern Family" will bump out "30 Rock" for best comedy series at the Emmy Awards. If "Modern Family" manages to keep "30 Rock" from a fourth consecutive win, the critically acclaimed comedy would join an esteemed group of shows to take TV's top honor for their freshman seasons. Among those laffers that managed this laudable feat: "All in the Family" (1971, the first of four wins); "Taxi" (1979, the first of three in a row); "Cheers" (1983, the first of four); "The Cosby Show" (1985); "The Golden Girls" (1986, the first of two in a row); "The Wonder Years" (1988); "Frasier" (1994, the first of...

Emmy pundits' video slugfest: Best drama and comedy series

While dishing the Emmy race for best drama series, Chris "Boomer" Beachum, Rob Licuria (Awards Heaven) and I discuss how different the voting system is compared with that of the acting categories. Understanding the process is essential to making an intelligent prediction. Every year, about 300 members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences serve as judges of best drama or comedy series. They're asked to watch two sample episodes of the six nominees, and the question we pundits must ask is this: Do they really watch all 12 before checking off their ballots? (To see a full list of episode submissions, click here.) We know that voters do watch all of the episodes...

Dueling Emmy predictions: Mike versus Tom

Entertainment Weekly's Mike Ausiello and I mostly agree on who'll win Emmys in the top series races Aug. 29. However, there are significant differences in our rankings per category, and there is drastic disagreement over how we size up the contest for best comedy actor. I've got Tony Shalhoub ("Monk") in first place, Mike's got him in last! Note: My predix are still a bit tentative. I haven't seen a few of the episodes submitted to Emmy judges by nominees as examples of their best work. When I finish up that viewing in a few days, I may make a few changes. Mike may want to make a few last-minute switcheroos too? Meantime, thank you,...

Up close: Emmy DVDs used for judging best comedy series

Below is what was shipped to about 300 members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences who agreed to judge the Emmy category of best comedy series. Each voter got a DVD box of six discs that contain two episodes each of the six nominated programs: "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Glee," "Modern Family," "Nurse Jackie," "The Office" and "30 Rock." Producers of nominated programs actually submit a total of six sample episodes to be judged. They're divided into three sets (Panel A, Panel B, Panel C) of two episodes of each show, which are sent randomly to voters who will judge one set each, sign an affidavit attesting that they viewed all episodes in their...
