• Nominees for the International Documentary Assn. Awards were announced Wednesday. Contending for the top prize of best feature documentary are: "Exit Through the Gift Shop," "The Oath," "Steam of Life," "Sweetgrass" and "Waste Land." In making the announcement, IDA executive director Michael Lumpkin said, "This has been another banner year for documentary films, and that is reflected in our list of nominees. Entries to the awards increased by nearly 20% this year, and the quality of the films vying for recognition is unprecedented." Early forecast of SAG Awards: Best TV drama series ensemble
It looks like only one new show -- "Boardwalk Empire" -- is likely to make it into the drama series ensemble race at the SAG Awards. That is the word from our TV gurus Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Rob Licuria (AwardsHeaven). They agree that the new HBO series will contend against "Dexter," "The Good Wife" and reigning two-time champ "Mad Men." Early forecast of SAG Awards: Best TV drama actor
It doesn't matter anymore that Hugh Laurie ("House") won TV drama actor of 2006 and 2008 at the SAG Awards. He won't even be nominated at the next batch of kudos to be bestowed by the Screen Actors Guild on Jan. 30, according to our pundit Rob Licuria (AwardsHeaven). Rob boots Laurie from his lineup of five projected nominees in favor of Steve Buscemi ("Boardwalk Empire"). Now that the fall TV shows have begun to play out, we have a better idea of which ones may be serious contenders at the next big batch of awards: Golden Globes. I asked our gurus, Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Rob Licuria, (AwardsHeaven) to pipe in with their early handicapping. Boomer responded first with his breakdown. Flashback: When 'The Defenders' swept the Emmys
TV critics give a thumbs-down verdict to "The Defenders," which debuted last night on CBS. The L.A. Times' Mary McNamara notes that it "stars Jim Belushi and Jerry O'Connell as a father-and-son-like team of Vegas lawyers who, when not struggling with, respectively, an ugly divorce and a penchant for fly-by sex, take on kind of tough cases and use cheap showmanship and contrived last-minute breaks to win them. It's enough to make a grown TV critic cry. ... There's actually no reason this couldn't be a perfectly fine legal procedural, except there's no indication that anyone is attempting to make it one." What to think of the Emmys? (Part 2)
Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Rob Licuria (AwardsHeaven) and I continue our chat about the Emmy ceremony and award results. (See part 1 here.) Especially interesting is Chris' observation about "Mad Men." It's the 14th show to win three awards as best series (drama or comedy), but the only one in its group never to win an award for acting. 'Mad Men' and Bryan Cranston three-peat at Emmys while Kyra Sedgwick finally wins
While both the drama series "Mad Men" and lead actor Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") won Emmys for the third consecutive year, Kyra Sedgwick defied the odds and finally prevailed with her fifth consecutive lead actress bid for "The Closer." She was expected to lose this year to Julianna Margulies, star of the freshman hit "The Good Wife."
