Contending for the top prize of best feature documentary are: "Exit Through the Gift Shop," "The Oath," "Steam of Life," "Sweetgrass" and "Waste Land." In making the announcement, IDA executive director Michael Lumpkin said, "This has been another banner year for documentary films, and that is reflected in our list of nominees. Gold Derby nuggets: 'The Fighter' trailer packs a punch | Mark Zuckerberg on 'The Social Network' | Sasha Stone: supporting actress race 'wide open'

• For Kyle Buchanan, the trailer for "The Fighter," which debuted during Sunday's airing of "Mad Men," was a "wowser." He thinks this preview of the biopic starring Mark Wahlberg is expert at "reestablishing the movie as a highbrow awards pick in a two-minute spot so confident that a dessicated, transformative Christian Bale gets less screen time than Melissa Leo's amazing hair. (But what hair it is! Oscars now for that, please.)" VULTURE • Pete Hammond has all the details of the Oscar push for "Alice in Wonderland." As he reports, "this 6th biggest grosser of all time will start an unusual four-day theatrical engagement Sunday aimed squarely at attracting Academy members and Hollywood guilds....

Gold Derby nuggets: Oscars not moving ... in 2012 | Clint Eastwood on 'Hereafter' | Matthew Weiner teases 'Mad Men' finale

• Looks like the Oscars won't be moving up to January after all as per the following statement: "The Academy’s Board of Governors has determined that the date of the 84th Academy Awards in 2012 will not be significantly earlier than the now-traditional last Sunday in February. A different date still remains a possibility in subsequent years, and the Academy’s staff and Board will continue to evaluate the advantages and challenges associated with such a change." • Anne Thompson analyzes the list of the 65 films contending for the foreign language Oscar and notes, "Per usual, Sony Pictures Classics boasts four entries this year: 'Incendies,' 'Of Gods and Men,' 'In a Better World' and 'Life,...

Early forecast of SAG Awards: Best TV drama series ensemble

It looks like only one new show -- "Boardwalk Empire" -- is likely to make it into the drama series ensemble race at the SAG Awards. That is the word from our TV gurus Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Rob Licuria (AwardsHeaven). They agree that the new HBO series will contend against "Dexter," "The Good Wife" and reigning two-time champ "Mad Men." For the fifth slot, Rob gives the edge to "The Closer" while Boomer opts for "True Blood." Below, Boomer breaks down the race for us, according to front-runners, possible contenders and long shots. TV shows nominated last year are marked on the list below with an asterisk (*) TV DRAMA SERIES ENSEMBLE (Front-runners) "Boardwalk...

Early forecast of SAG Awards: Best TV drama actor

It doesn't matter anymore that Hugh Laurie ("House") won TV drama actor of 2006 and 2008 at the SAG Awards. He won't even be nominated at the next batch of kudos to be bestowed by the Screen Actors Guild on Jan. 30, according to our pundit Rob Licuria (AwardsHeaven). Rob boots Laurie from his lineup of five projected nominees in favor of Steve Buscemi ("Boardwalk Empire"). Rob also predicts Gabriel Byrne ("In Treatment"), Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad"), Michael C. Hall ("Dexter") and Jon Hamm ("Mad Men"). Hall won last year. Memo to Hugh Laurie: Don't give up all hope. Our other pundit, Chris "Boomer" Beachum, includes you in his high five along with Byrne, Cranston,...

Early forecast of Golden Globes: Best TV drama series

Now that the fall TV shows have begun to play out, we have a better idea of which ones may be serious contenders at the next big batch of awards: Golden Globes. I asked our gurus, Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Rob Licuria, (AwardsHeaven) to pipe in with their early handicapping. Boomer responded first with his breakdown. Below is how he sizes up the contest for TV drama series. Rob offered his slight edit: "I would move 'Damages' up to front-runners, add 'No Ordinary Family' to possibles." Surprisingly, that means "Boardwalk Empire" is the only new show they list as a front-runner to be nominated. Normally, the Globes make a special point to spotlight hot new...

Flashback: When 'The Defenders' swept the Emmys

TV critics give a thumbs-down verdict to "The Defenders," which debuted last night on CBS. The L.A. Times' Mary McNamara notes that it "stars Jim Belushi and Jerry O'Connell as a father-and-son-like team of Vegas lawyers who, when not struggling with, respectively, an ugly divorce and a penchant for fly-by sex, take on kind of tough cases and use cheap showmanship and contrived last-minute breaks to win them. It's enough to make a grown TV critic cry. ... There's actually no reason this couldn't be a perfectly fine legal procedural, except there's no indication that anyone is attempting to make it one." A shame. What makes the negative reviews so tragic is that "The Defenders"...

Poll: Can 'Boardwalk Empire' beat 'Mad Men' at the Emmys?

Reviews of "Boardwalk Empire" are so positive that it's clear that the new HBO series about the mob world of Atlantic City in the 1920s will probably be a serious Emmy rival to "Mad Men," which has won best drama series for the past three years. But how serious? Below are some views of our forum posters. See more here. Then tell us what you think in our poll. ATYPICAL: Marty Scorsese could and probably will win his first Emmy for it. SEANFLYNN: Lots of posing in front of expensive sets and camera movement for little apparent purpose. Too early to say whether this will grow and then sustain itself, but this was about what...

What to think of the Emmys? (Part 2)

Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Rob Licuria (AwardsHeaven) and I continue our chat about the Emmy ceremony and award results. (See part 1 here.) Especially interesting is Chris' observation about "Mad Men." It's the 14th show to win three awards as best series (drama or comedy), but the only one in its group never to win an award for acting. Or, for that matter, directing. Huh. What's up with that, eh? Also watch our video about the future of the Emmy telecast.

'Mad Men' and Bryan Cranston three-peat at Emmys while Kyra Sedgwick finally wins

While both the drama series "Mad Men" and lead actor Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") won Emmys for the third consecutive year, Kyra Sedgwick defied the odds and finally prevailed with her fifth consecutive lead actress bid for "The Closer." She was expected to lose this year to Julianna Margulies, star of the freshman hit "The Good Wife." Rather, it was Archie Panjabi who flew the flag for that show at the Emmy Awards, winning in the supporting actress category, something none of our pundits foresaw. They didn't do much better on the supporting actor side, with only two of them predicting that win by Aaron Paul on his second bid for "Breaking Bad." The rest...
