Early forecast of SAG Awards: Best TV drama series ensembleIt looks like only one new show -- "Boardwalk Empire" -- is likely to make it into the drama series ensemble race at the SAG Awards. That is the word from our TV gurus Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Rob Licuria (AwardsHeaven). They agree that the new HBO series will contend against "Dexter," "The Good Wife" and reigning two-time champ "Mad Men." For the fifth slot, Rob gives the edge to "The Closer" while Boomer opts for "True Blood." Below, Boomer breaks down the race for us, according to front-runners, possible contenders and long shots. TV shows nominated last year are marked on the list below with an asterisk (*) TV DRAMA SERIES ENSEMBLE (Front-runners) "Boardwalk...

Early forecast of Golden Globes: Best TV drama seriesNow that the fall TV shows have begun to play out, we have a better idea of which ones may be serious contenders at the next big batch of awards: Golden Globes. I asked our gurus, Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Rob Licuria, (AwardsHeaven) to pipe in with their early handicapping. Boomer responded first with his breakdown. Below is how he sizes up the contest for TV drama series. Rob offered his slight edit: "I would move 'Damages' up to front-runners, add 'No Ordinary Family' to possibles." Surprisingly, that means "Boardwalk Empire" is the only new show they list as a front-runner to be nominated. Normally, the Globes make a special point to spotlight hot new...

Poll: Is 'Avatar,' 'Inception, 'True Blood' or 'Twilight: Eclipse' the Ultimate Scream? Not surprisingly, the tough guy tube channel Spike has dubbed its annual kudos the Scream Awards. The 5th edition of these awards -- honoring the best in sci-fi, fantasy, horror and comic books as determined by the fans in an online vote -- takes place on Oct. 19. While the blockbuster "Inception" picked up a staggering 15 nominations in 14 categories, it is the scrappy "Kick-Ass" that leads with 17 bids spread across 13 categories. "Iron Man 2" vies for 13 awards. They are all in contention for the top prize of Ultimate Scream as are "Alice in Wonderland," "Avatar," "District 9," "Twilight: Eclipse" and "Zombieland." Among the TV fare in the running, "True Blood"...

Can 'Mad Men' make it three in a row at the Emmys?Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Rob Licuria (AwardsHeaven) agree that "Mad Men" will win best drama series at the Emmy Awards for the third year in a row. If this series set in the 1960s prevails, it would equal the achievement of "The Defenders," which owned this award for three years from 1962. The Brit hit "Upstairs Downstairs" won three times in the 1970s (1974, 1975, 1977) while "Hill Street Blues" collared this award a record four consecutive times beginning in 1981. "The West Wing" matched that streak starting in 2000. And "L.A. Law" received a winning verdict four times (1987, 1989-1991) over its eight seasons. DRAMA SERIES: BOOMER'S PREDIX 1. "Mad Men" 2. "Dexter" 3....

Dueling Emmy predictions: Mike versus TomEntertainment Weekly's Mike Ausiello and I mostly agree on who'll win Emmys in the top series races Aug. 29. However, there are significant differences in our rankings per category, and there is drastic disagreement over how we size up the contest for best comedy actor. I've got Tony Shalhoub ("Monk") in first place, Mike's got him in last! Note: My predix are still a bit tentative. I haven't seen a few of the episodes submitted to Emmy judges by nominees as examples of their best work. When I finish up that viewing in a few days, I may make a few changes. Mike may want to make a few last-minute switcheroos too? Meantime, thank you,...

Emmy poll: Will 'Mad Men,' 'Lost,' 'Dexter' or 'The Good Wife' win best drama series?Just because "Mad Men" won best drama series for the last two years doesn't mean Emmy voters will be tired of it this year and chose one of its three closest rivals: "Dexter," "Lost" or "The Good Wife." Repeats are as common at the Emmys as they are on TV. "The West Wing" won this race four years in a row (2000-2003) and, over on the comedy side, "Frasier" holds the record for a series (drama or comedy) prevailing the most times: five (1994-1998). "Mad Men" has some strong advantages. For starters, it has the same big plus that "The West Wing" and "Frasier" had going for them: snob appeal. It's a high-brow show that's...

'Mad Men' is crazy like a fox at Emmy timingIt's no coincidence that "Mad Men" premiered its new season last night — just days before ballots are shipped to Emmy voters to pick winners. TV networks like AMC often air new seasons of Emmy contenders at strategic times to boost award hopes. Cable series can be more flexible about air dates than can broadcast channels, which usually conform to traditional launch times, such as September or January. But there are exceptions. NBC waited till May sweeps before airing the most recent season of "Friday Night Lights," which originally aired on DirecTV last fall. End of the Emmy eligibility period was May 31. Voting on nominations began June 4. Therefore, NBC gave "Friday Night Lights"...

My Emmy nominations predictions: 79% correctOK, I was behaving quite cheekily when I promised 100% accuracy with my Emmy nominations predictions, but I did score quite well: 79%. Of my 101 predix, 80 proved to be correct. There turned out to be two more nominations in these categories, thanks to accountants granting an extra slot in squeaker contests. Below is the breakdown. Emmy nominations: The good, the bad and the ugly (Boomer's version)"Overall excellent nominations throughout with very few complaints," says our Emmy expert Chris "Boomer" Beachum, who gives us his take on Emmy's good, bad and ugly results. Earlier, we posted the views of Rob Licuria. Now let's hear from Boomer: THE GOOD ● Some very pleasant surprises for people waiting a long while (Connie Britton, Kyle Chandler, Matthew Fox, Elizabeth Mitchell, January Jones, Christina Hendricks). Some very pleasant omissions for people and shows that had overstayed their welcome (Sally Field, Holly Hunter, Kiefer Sutherland, Sandra Oh, Chandra Wilson, Charlie Sheen, Jeremy Piven, "Weeds," "Family Guy," "Entourage"). ● Loved the wide range of shows getting nominations in directing and writing. ● Loved noms for people like...

'True Blood' breaks the Emmy vampire curseOne of the biggest shocks among Emmy nominations was the breakthrough bid by "True Blood" for best drama series. TV academy members — like all Hollywood award voters — usually refuse to be seduced by vampires. Back in the 1990s, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was acclaimed by critics and millions of fans, but it never reaped an Emmy nomination in a lead category. Year after year, there was deafening media outrage over its failure to make the Emmy list, but the snubs continued like stakes through the heart. Finally, after the show went off the air in 2003, the TV academy aimed to make things up to its cast and crew by staging a tribute...
