'Squid' wins best pic from NY online critics

December 11, 2005 |  1:22 pm

Here are the winners of the awards just decided by the New York Film Critics Online. Its vote results often line up with the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics, which have yet to unveil their winners this awards season. The NYFCC votes Dec. 12. The national society declares champs in early January.

Biggest surprise: "Crash" and "Brokeback Mountain" led on the first ballot for best picture, but then got usurped on the second tally by "The Squid and the Whale"! Philip Seymour Hoffman won best actor by a landslide vote on the first ballot, but Heath Ledger and Terrence Howard posted strong showings. The only other winner who prevailed on the first ballot was "Wallace & Gromit" as best animated picture.

Keira Knightley was the surprise choice as best actress over Reese Witherspoon, Charlize Theron, Judi Dench and Felicity Huffman.

This year the online critics tried a new voting system that dispensed with the secret ballot used last year. This year each critic listed their top three choices in each category, assigning three points to their favorite, then two points, then one to their third-ranking pick. The five entries in each category with the highest scores were then put to a vote as each critic cited one preference aloud. In order to win, a contender had to have both the most votes and appear on 51% of the ballots.

And the winners are:

Fernando Meirelles, "The Constant Gardener"

Mereilles as Best Director....great news!!
At least this group has more sense than the Broadcast Film Critics who didn't even give him nomination....what an insult.
