Here's the transcript of our chat with Arthur Golden, the author of the novel "Memoirs of a Geisha," which sold 4 million copies when it was originally published in 1997.

The book was recently adapted for film by producer Steven Spielberg and "Chicago" director Rob Marshall. (Star Ziyi Zhang was just nominated for best drama actress at the Golden Globes! Gong Li was voted best supporting actress by the National Board of Review!)

Tom O'Neil: Hi 'ya all! Arthur is here with us now
2005-12-15 16:14:14.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Hello, Mr. Golden.
2005-12-15 16:14:23.0
Arthur Golden: Hi, there!
2005-12-15 16:14:34.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: What inspired you to write Memoirs of a Geisha?
2005-12-15 16:14:54.0
paddyfilm: I was wondering what your thoughts were on the film adaptation
2005-12-15 16:15:02.0
Arthur Golden: About what inspired me...
2005-12-15 16:15:15.0
Arthur Golden: I met a guy while I was working in Japan whose mother was a geisha
2005-12-15 16:15:21.0
Arthur Golden: When I got back to the states, I got interesting in writing fiction, and it struck me as a great subject
2005-12-15 16:15:33.0
MichaelBluth: Interesting
2005-12-15 16:15:42.0
Arthur Golden: And about the adaptation...I'm very impressed with it.

Arthur Golden: The film is gorgeous and quite true to the novel
2005-12-15 16:15:52.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Did you get to meet that woman?
2005-12-15 16:16:08.0
Arthur Golden: I've seen if seven or eight times and it gets more powerful each time
2005-12-15 16:16:14.0
Arthur Golden: Did I ever meet...which woman?
2005-12-15 16:16:24.0
paddyfilm: How do you feel about Memoirs of a Geisha only getting one nod at the Golden Globes
2005-12-15 16:16:41.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: The woman who was a geisha.
2005-12-15 16:16:44.0
MichaelBluth: Kind of sad
2005-12-15 16:16:44.0
Arthur Golden: To paddyfilm...I'm not much of a follower of these things. Is one 'nod' a lot?
2005-12-15 16:16:46.0
Tom O'Neil: Arthur, what did you think of the film's end? It's different from the book, which keeps going in the story, right?
2005-12-15 16:16:54.0
Arthur Golden: Do you mean the woman in my book?
2005-12-15 16:17:31.0
Arthur Golden: Actually, the character of Sayuri is a complete invention.
2005-12-15 16:17:32.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: yes, the woman that inspired you to write it.
2005-12-15 16:17:55.0
Arthur Golden: I did a great deal of research to insure that the portrait of that world would be accurate...
2005-12-15 16:17:59.0
BillyT92679: What was your impression of Ziyi Zhang's performance? She is such a wondrous actress and luminous beauty.
2005-12-15 16:18:05.0
Arthur Golden: but the characters are all completely invented.
2005-12-15 16:18:16.0
Arthur Golden: I thought Zhang Ziyi did a terrific job...
2005-12-15 16:18:31.0
Arthur Golden: Tom, you're right ending of the flim is different...
2005-12-15 16:18:47.0
MichaelBluth: Geisha was a Beauiful Looking movie
2005-12-15 16:18:51.0
Arthur Golden: but I added New York at the end of the novel for a very novelistic (not cinematic) reason
2005-12-15 16:19:24.0
Arthur Golden: The geisha needed to know about American culture in order to narrate her own story for Americans
2005-12-15 16:19:41.0
Arthur Golden: Otherwise she wouldn't be able to interpret events properly for us
2005-12-15 16:19:54.0
Arthur Golden: But in the film, NY is unnecessary because she isn't 'narrating' in quite the same way
2005-12-15 16:19:55.0
paddyfilm: mr.golden what have been some of your favourite films this year
2005-12-15 16:20:11.0
Arthur Golden: All of which is a long way of saying I don't mind the ending being different. I thought it was very effective.
2005-12-15 16:20:48.0
Arthur Golden: This year....I've been very impressed with a number of movies....
2005-12-15 16:20:59.0
Arthur Golden: ....but I'm having movie amnesia!! Remind me of the goodies...
2005-12-15 16:21:03.0
BillyT92679: Walk The Line?
2005-12-15 16:21:19.0
paddyfilm: good night and good luck
2005-12-15 16:21:28.0
Arthur Golden: Yes, that was a very good one.
2005-12-15 16:21:44.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: What is it that fascinates you about Japanese culture in general?
2005-12-15 16:21:46.0
Arthur Golden: I though War of the Worlds was pretty startling to watch; Amazing effects!
2005-12-15 16:22:05.0
Arthur Golden: I got interested in Japan because I was interested in the language, actually. Fascinating language.
2005-12-15 16:22:31.0
Arthur Golden: What film I'll see next, probably Brokeback Mountain
2005-12-15 16:22:48.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Did you find it a difficult language to learn?
2005-12-15 16:22:54.0
paddyfilm: Mr. Golden has much input did you have on the film
2005-12-15 16:23:21.0
Arthur Golden: I'm not a filmmaker, so of course I couldn't be helpful at all during the shoot...
2005-12-15 16:23:27.0
thetriplethreat3: what possed you to write 'Memoirs of a Geisha'
2005-12-15 16:23:36.0
Arthur Golden: But I did look closely at the screenplay and offer comments.
2005-12-15 16:23:55.0
paddyfilm: Did you have a hand in choosing the director
2005-12-15 16:23:59.0
BillyT92679: Mr. Golden, have you thought about possibly writing an original screenplay?
2005-12-15 16:24:02.0
Arthur Golden: Most directors ignore comments from the writer, but Rob Marshall is an extremely collaborative guy
2005-12-15 16:24:12.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: What do you think of the casting of Chinese actors in Japanese roles?
2005-12-15 16:24:18.0
Arthur Golden: About choosing the director....making a movie is very expensive,
2005-12-15 16:24:24.0
Arthur Golden: and they don't give much control to outsiders!
2005-12-15 16:24:30.0
Arthur Golden: I had no influence over that.
2005-12-15 16:24:39.0
thetriplethreat3: what possesed you to write 'Memoirs of a Geisha' *possesed
2005-12-15 16:24:53.0
Arthur Golden: BillyT, I didn't think about writing it, actually. I was working on my next book.
2005-12-15 16:25:21.0
Arthur Golden: Triple Threat, I thought it was excellent material for a novel! It was as simple as that.
2005-12-15 16:25:30.0
Arthur Golden: About the Chinese actresses...
2005-12-15 16:25:36.0
MichaelBluth: Whats the title of your next book
2005-12-15 16:25:54.0
Arthur Golden: That doesn't bother me. Hugh Grant plays Americans. Why can't a Chinese actress play a Japanese?
2005-12-15 16:26:06.0
thetriplethreat3: wat was ur muse on writing the book
2005-12-15 16:26:09.0
Arthur Golden: Don't have a title yet, actually. Sigh. That's the last thing that comes.
2005-12-15 16:26:09.0
BillyT92679: Thank you for your pleasant responses. God bless and Happy Holidays!
2005-12-15 16:26:20.0
Tom O'Neil: Rob Marshall admits he took a lot of liberties with geisha dress and traditions just to make things more cinematic. Did that bother you?
2005-12-15 16:26:44.0
thetriplethreat3: wat was ur muse on writing the book
2005-12-15 16:26:46.0
Arthur Golden: There are many directions the movie could have taken, including a documentary-style approach
2005-12-15 16:26:59.0
Arthur Golden: Rob Marshall is more of an artist and has made a very artisitc film.
2005-12-15 16:27:03.0
MichaelBluth: ok
2005-12-15 16:27:04.0
Arthur Golden: Or however you spell that...
2005-12-15 16:27:13.0
thetriplethreat3: wat was ur muse on writing the book
2005-12-15 16:27:19.0
Arthur Golden: And I'm very impressed with the film's power
2005-12-15 16:27:23.0
Arthur Golden: Muse, eh?
2005-12-15 16:27:27.0
Arthur Golden: Not sure I had one.
2005-12-15 16:27:30.0
Arthur Golden: Does my wife count?
2005-12-15 16:27:43.0
thetriplethreat3: lol i guess
2005-12-15 16:27:46.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Because their history of being enemies especially during WW2. There still seems tob e a lot of tension between Japan & China. Isn’t that so?
2005-12-15 16:28:02.0
Arthur Golden: Definitely a lot of tension. Absolutely.
2005-12-15 16:28:03.0
Tom O'Neil: What was the response of the movie version in Japan?
2005-12-15 16:28:12.0
Arthur Golden: The movie seems to be doing extremely well in Japan
2005-12-15 16:28:22.0
Tom O'Neil: No backlash?
2005-12-15 16:28:39.0
Arthur Golden: None that I've been aware of. Most of it has occurred OUTSIDE Japan
2005-12-15 16:28:42.0
paddyfilm: Did you ever think of doing the film in Japan with subtitles
2005-12-15 16:28:47.0
MichaelBluth: I heard there was Backlash in Some Asian Country
2005-12-15 16:28:55.0
Arthur Golden: Well, some directors would have taken that approach....
2005-12-15 16:29:07.0
Arthur Golden: But it clearly wouldn't have been a big movie. More of an arthouse film.
2005-12-15 16:29:32.0
paddyfilm: What do you think the film version been like in the hands of Speilberg or Spike Jonez
2005-12-15 16:29:34.0
Arthur Golden: MichaelB, you may be right. I haven't been following it closely
2005-12-15 16:29:46.0
MichaelBluth: ok
2005-12-15 16:29:55.0
Arthur Golden: Paddy...it certainly would have been different. Spike Jonez would probably have had me running around in kimono!
2005-12-15 16:30:07.0
Tom O'Neil: What do you think Spielberg would've done differently if he HAD directed it, as originally planned?
2005-12-15 16:30:25.0
Arthur Golden: Hard to say...
2005-12-15 16:30:36.0
Arthur Golden: I think Steven Spielberg has made some amazing movies.
2005-12-15 16:30:38.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: So in the way the tension exists between them. It could be comparable to Russians playing Americans.
2005-12-15 16:30:46.0
Arthur Golden: Rob Marshall is a choreographer, or started as one. So the film may be more artistic in many ways
2005-12-15 16:31:16.0
Arthur Golden: Yes, Ol' Blue, I suppose that's right. But to me the only thing that matters is the performances
2005-12-15 16:31:18.0
BTN: What if Edward Zwick who made The Last Samurai had directed.
2005-12-15 16:31:25.0
thetriplethreat3: or do u think you would have liked it better if he directd it (spielberg)
2005-12-15 16:31:38.0
Arthur Golden: Not sure of his style, really. I did see that movie, but I don't know enough about him to conjecture.
2005-12-15 16:31:55.0
Arthur Golden: Hmmmm.....
2005-12-15 16:32:18.0
Arthur Golden: No, I like it very much the way it is. I can't guess what I might have felt if SS had done it. Everything depends on the product!
2005-12-15 16:32:27.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: So are you familiar with Japanese and Chinese cinema?
2005-12-15 16:32:29.0
Arthur Golden: If it had been a terrific movie, and it probably would have been, then I would have been pleased
2005-12-15 16:32:49.0
paddyfilm: Is there are regrets in not adapting the film yourself
2005-12-15 16:32:51.0
Arthur Golden: Ol' Blue...the answer is, somewhat. Much more than the average American, but less than true Asian film buffs
2005-12-15 16:32:53.0
BTN: Is there anything that you would have liked to be kept in the movie that was taken out
2005-12-15 16:33:02.0
turtle: Any concerns about the movie "overshadowing" the book? That's of concern to some writers. (I'm guessing not for you, or you wouldn't be here...) Thoughts?
2005-12-15 16:33:07.0
Arthur Golden: No regrets. It would have been an enormous amount of work
2005-12-15 16:33:15.0
thetriplethreat3: but would u preferr speilberg
2005-12-15 16:33:26.0
Arthur Golden: I'm not concerned about overshadowing, because the book remains just as it was.
2005-12-15 16:33:28.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: What are some asian films you like?
2005-12-15 16:33:28.0
MichaelBluth: i like Spilberg
2005-12-15 16:33:42.0
Arthur Golden: The film may bring more attention to the book, actually, so that's fine with me!
2005-12-15 16:33:49.0
turtle: Agreed!
2005-12-15 16:33:53.0
Tom O'Neil: I hear that the book is much tougher in its depiction of U.S. soldiers? True? Did Rob Marshall lighten up on them?
2005-12-15 16:34:08.0
Arthur Golden: I'm really happy with Rob Marshall. Hard to say what it might have been like
2005-12-15 16:34:14.0
Arthur Golden: About Asian films I've liked...
2005-12-15 16:34:25.0
Arthur Golden: One of my faves is Oni Baba. Have you seen that one?
2005-12-15 16:34:36.0
Arthur Golden: Also a big fan of Gong Li's movies
2005-12-15 16:34:56.0
turtle: The book's been out for awhile; did you watch the movie and think, "Why didn't I think of that?" I'm wondering if you think about going back and tweaking things.
2005-12-15 16:35:03.0
Arthur Golden: I don't think it is tougher on American soldiers
2005-12-15 16:35:08.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: yes, I've seen that one. It's the kind of horror film with the mask right?
2005-12-15 16:35:10.0
Arthur Golden: But it is certainly tougher on Japanese men
2005-12-15 16:35:18.0
Arthur Golden: The book, I mean.
2005-12-15 16:35:32.0
Arthur Golden: Many Japanese men get VERY drunk at geisha parties....
2005-12-15 16:35:39.0
Arthur Golden: ...and I was somewhat pitiless in depicting that
2005-12-15 16:35:45.0
MichaelBluth:
2005-12-15 16:35:59.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: How about Zhang Yimou films?
2005-12-15 16:36:03.0
thetriplethreat3: do u have any talk show apperences coming up .... oprah...tyra banks, good morning america
2005-12-15 16:36:04.0
paddyfilm: Do you live in Japan Mr. Golden
2005-12-15 16:36:05.0
Arthur Golden: There was indeed one thing I thought of tweaking...though it's too late, of course
2005-12-15 16:36:12.0
Arthur Golden: Yes, big Zhang Yimou fan.
2005-12-15 16:36:23.0
Arthur Golden: No, just a very long apperance at my desk
2005-12-15 16:36:41.0
Arthur Golden: Yes, I lived in Japan for a year.
2005-12-15 16:36:51.0
paddyfilm: What was your intial reaction when you saw the film
2005-12-15 16:36:54.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Which is your favorite of Zhang Yimou?
2005-12-15 16:37:04.0
Arthur Golden: Did someone ask if things from the book were left out of the fllm?
2005-12-15 16:37:08.0
MichaelBluth: i will be back
2005-12-15 16:37:10.0
turtle: What was the detail you wanted to tweak in the book? Would you tell us?
2005-12-15 16:37:26.0
Arthur Golden: My favorite Zhang Yimou film is that one about living through the cultural revolution...what was it called?
2005-12-15 16:37:33.0
Arthur Golden: "To Live"...maybe?
2005-12-15 16:37:58.0
Arthur Golden: I like that the Baron won the mizuage auction, but Mameha wouldn't give it to him. That wasn't in the book. Nice touch
2005-12-15 16:38:07.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: With the man that gambled all his belongings away leaving Gong Li homeless with a Child?
2005-12-15 16:38:11.0
turtle: Cool...thanks.
2005-12-15 16:38:14.0
thetriplethreat3: so are japanese book all you will write about
2005-12-15 16:38:17.0
Arthur Golden: Yes, that's the one
2005-12-15 16:38:25.0
Arthur Golden: Absolutely not!
2005-12-15 16:38:33.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Yeah that's To Live
2005-12-15 16:38:34.0
Arthur Golden: This next book has nothing to do with Japan...
2005-12-15 16:38:47.0
Arthur Golden: ...though my usual joke is to say that my second novel is 'Memoirs of a Sumo Wrestler'.
2005-12-15 16:39:03.0
thetriplethreat3: lol
2005-12-15 16:39:34.0
Tom O'Neil: How long did it take to write the book? How many drafts did you write before publication?
2005-12-15 16:39:38.0
Arthur Golden: Actually, the book took me nine years to write.
2005-12-15 16:39:50.0
thetriplethreat3: why
2005-12-15 16:39:51.0
Arthur Golden: I wrote it three completely separate times...
2005-12-15 16:40:02.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: I’ve read you studied Chinese Mandarin as well. What do you feel are the differences in culture?
2005-12-15 16:40:12.0
Tom O'Neil: Did you work from a plot outline?
2005-12-15 16:40:17.0
paddyfilm: What did you think of Gong Li's performance
2005-12-15 16:40:38.0
Arthur Golden: First I wrote it in third person, then threw it out after interviewing a geisha and learning that I'd gotten the details wrong...
2005-12-15 16:40:44.0
Arthur Golden: ...in spite of all my research!
2005-12-15 16:40:54.0
Arthur Golden: The second time the details were right, but the book turned out to be dry.
2005-12-15 16:41:10.0
Arthur Golden: I'd kept too much distance from the characters, b/c I was afraid of impersonating a woman
2005-12-15 16:41:20.0
Arthur Golden: Then the third time, I finally got it right.
2005-12-15 16:41:31.0
Arthur Golden: I thought Gong Li was terrific.
2005-12-15 16:41:36.0
thetriplethreat3: were u happy with the performaces of the actors and how the portrayed your characters
2005-12-15 16:41:45.0
Arthur Golden: Well, there are a great many differences....
2005-12-15 16:41:57.0
Arthur Golden: (between Japanese and Chinese culture, I mean)...
2005-12-15 16:42:08.0
Arthur Golden: ...but I'm not a good enough typist to explain them here!
2005-12-15 16:42:10.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: What do you feel are the main ones?
2005-12-15 16:42:32.0
Arthur Golden: Japanese culture is extremely concerned with hierarchy.
2005-12-15 16:42:47.0
Arthur Golden: In the U.S., Japanese businessmen generally work in large companies
2005-12-15 16:42:52.0
paddyfilm: What the worst thing that could happen with the film being made
2005-12-15 16:42:52.0
Tom O'Neil: Who are your favorite famous people who are REALLY nuts about your book? You know, like 'moonie' crazy about your book?
2005-12-15 16:43:02.0
Arthur Golden: whereas Chinese ones work for themselves in small businesses
2005-12-15 16:43:15.0
Arthur Golden: Definitely Heather Graham.
2005-12-15 16:43:31.0
Arthur Golden: But I don't know if she's 'Moonie' crazy
2005-12-15 16:43:33.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: The Japanese are more achievement and success driven as well probably.
2005-12-15 16:43:40.0
Arthur Golden: She named it as her fave in an interview
2005-12-15 16:44:17.0
Arthur Golden: I was very happy with the performances, by the way.
2005-12-15 16:44:25.0
Arthur Golden: A number of them are real doozies
2005-12-15 16:44:31.0
Tom O'Neil: What's your fave scene in the movie?
2005-12-15 16:45:02.0
paddyfilm: Thank you for answering my questions Mr. Golden and Memoirs of a Geisha is one of my favourites of all time. Can't wait for your next
2005-12-15 16:45:04.0
Arthur Golden: My fave is the very last scene. But I'm also quite taken with the opening of the movie
2005-12-15 16:45:10.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: But I sense that Japanese culture in the past like in the Samurai period was probably more honor driven.
2005-12-15 16:45:28.0
Arthur Golden: Thanks so much, paddy. I appreciate it. Are you english?
2005-12-15 16:46:14.0
Tom O'Neil: Were you present during filming?
2005-12-15 16:46:31.0
Arthur Golden: Yes, I came out with my wife and (college-aged) kids to watch for a couple of days
2005-12-15 16:46:35.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Have you read any Japanese or Chinese works?
2005-12-15 16:46:39.0
Arthur Golden: Then we came out again during the scoring, which was very impressive
2005-12-15 16:46:46.0
Tom O'Neil: What scenes did you see being shot?
2005-12-15 16:46:48.0
thetriplethreat3: were u happy with the performaces of the actors and how the portrayed your characters
2005-12-15 16:46:56.0
Arthur Golden: Ol' Blue, my favorite of all time is 'The Story of the Stone' in five volumes. Fabulous book
2005-12-15 16:47:06.0
Arthur Golden: Yes, very happy with the performances
2005-12-15 16:47:20.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Who wrote that book?
2005-12-15 16:47:27.0
Wonka1996: *sigh* I just got home from the office. I wanted to be here for the beginning! What have I missed? (it's probably bad netiquette to ask)
2005-12-15 16:47:41.0
MichaelBluth: i'm Back what i miss
2005-12-15 16:47:59.0
Arthur Golden: I was there for the scene at the Baron's estate, during the blossom viewing party
2005-12-15 16:48:20.0
Arthur Golden: Sorry, Wonka, not bad etiquette at all...I'm just not a good enough typist to answer!
2005-12-15 16:48:30.0
Wonka1996: Arthur, I saw the film Sunday night and it's easily my favorite of the year. I prefer it to King Kong, Chronicles of Narnia, and Pride and Prejudice (which I respectively almost loved, loved and liked).
2005-12-15 16:48:55.0
Arthur Golden: Delighted to hear that! I think they did a very impressive job with the movie.
2005-12-15 16:48:55.0
Wonka1996: Your book is also one of my favorites; it helped me get through one of the dullest summers of my life, working at a law library several years ago.
2005-12-15 16:49:10.0
Arthur Golden: Ooh, a law library, eh? Glad I could help.
2005-12-15 16:49:21.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Did you read "The Pillow Book"?
2005-12-15 16:49:28.0
Arthur Golden: Yes, but years ago. Interesting.
2005-12-15 16:49:32.0
Tom O'Neil: I hear that John Williams didn't write the score till the last minute. As of early August the score still hadn't been written, true?
2005-12-15 16:50:01.0
Arthur Golden: In early August we came out to watch the scoring, so he'd finished it already.
2005-12-15 16:50:10.0
Arthur Golden: But he told me it only took him a couple of months.
2005-12-15 16:50:11.0
Arthur Golden: Amazing
2005-12-15 16:50:37.0
MichaelBluth: yes is it
2005-12-15 16:50:44.0
Wonka1996: I'm sure you must be aware of all the negativity surrounding from the film, generally from people who haven't seen it and are miffed about the casting, and critics who have seen it and just appreciate a good opportunity to come up with "clever" (read: mean-spirited) ways to describe what they dislike. With that in mind, are you at all nervous for the film's reception tomorrow?
2005-12-15 16:51:08.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: or "The Diary of Lady Murasaki"? There are somewhat similarities between those books and yours, right?
2005-12-15 16:51:29.0
Arthur Golden: Wonka, I think you're right on.
2005-12-15 16:51:31.0
Wonka1996: That is amazing. My favorite on that score is easily The Chairman's Waltz; I was pleased by its.... recurrence in the film. ;-)
2005-12-15 16:51:40.0
Arthur Golden: But when people see the film, they find that it speaks for itself.
2005-12-15 16:51:47.0
MichaelBluth: ok
2005-12-15 16:51:49.0
Arthur Golden: I'm not nervous. I belong to a very small club...
2005-12-15 16:52:00.0
Arthur Golden: ...of writers who are extremely happy with the film made from their books.
2005-12-15 16:52:10.0
Arthur Golden: I've even had an excellent relationship with the studio!
2005-12-15 16:52:21.0
thetriplethreat3: are u more attracted to asian women
2005-12-15 16:52:29.0
Tom O'Neil: That is a VERY small club, all right!
2005-12-15 16:52:35.0
Wonka1996: I agree. Admittedly my audience was full of people who paid $20 each to see the film, so we were bound to receive it well. But I think that come Friday, the discussions on IMDB will be more positsive or - at least - balanced.
2005-12-15 16:52:41.0
Arthur Golden: Geez, I'm married. Better not get myself into trouble!
2005-12-15 16:53:04.0
thetriplethreat3: lol i mean growing up
2005-12-15 16:53:21.0
Wonka1996: You can't go wrong with Rob Marshall. I've got to meet him some day. His movies are my personal saviour... from Chicago's miserable weather. ;-)
2005-12-15 16:53:40.0
Arthur Golden: Yes, he's a helluva film maker
2005-12-15 16:53:53.0
Arthur Golden: Chicago is a great city, though!
2005-12-15 16:54:00.0
Wonka1996: Was there any performance that you found most satisfying?
2005-12-15 16:54:05.0
Wonka1996: I think Youki Kudoh is so underrated.
2005-12-15 16:54:10.0
Arthur Golden: I was so pleased when I heard Rob Marshall would be directing.
2005-12-15 16:54:17.0
Wonka1996: Chicago is great. Won't be here much longer, though.
2005-12-15 16:54:24.0
Arthur Golden: I agree about Youki Kudoh...and about the performances
2005-12-15 16:54:37.0
Arthur Golden: They'll all pretty amazing, but the most jaw dropping one for me is Nobu.
2005-12-15 16:54:43.0
MichaelBluth: theres Oscar Buzz Around this movie What do you think of that
2005-12-15 16:54:51.0
Arthur Golden: He doesn't speak even a single word of English
2005-12-15 16:54:58.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Had you imagined an actress in the role as you wrote the book?
2005-12-15 16:55:04.0
Arthur Golden: Oscar Buzz is of only passing interest to me, to be honest.
2005-12-15 16:55:21.0
MichaelBluth: OK
2005-12-15 16:55:22.0
Arthur Golden: When I learn what movie won the best picture oscar, I look up from my morning coffee for about two seconds
2005-12-15 16:55:29.0
Arthur Golden: and then go back to reading the paper
2005-12-15 16:55:42.0
MichaelBluth:
2005-12-15 16:55:49.0
Wonka1996: Same here. This is the perfect follow up project (similar themes, but not entirely similar) for him and he really delivers. I hope he remains proud of his work no matter how many times people ask the same lame questions about the film's politics for interviews. *sigh*
2005-12-15 16:55:50.0
Arthur Golden: I didn't imainge any actresses in any of the roles...
2005-12-15 16:56:01.0
Arthur Golden: ...and I didn't even imagine the story becoming a movie!
2005-12-15 16:56:31.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Well good for you, that it did turn out into a movie!
2005-12-15 16:56:44.0
Arthur Golden: Thanks!
2005-12-15 16:56:58.0
Wonka1996: Nobu is my favorite amongst the supporting males too. I think he's necessarily permitted to exhibit the most range. That's not to say that Watanabe and the others (esp. the actor playing Dr. Crab) aren't great. They're terrific.
2005-12-15 16:57:11.0
Arthur Golden: I'm with you.
2005-12-15 16:57:33.0
Tom O'Neil: We've gotta wrap up soon. Arthur, do you have a final thought of your own to volunteer?
2005-12-15 16:57:35.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: How do you feel about writers, who say it’s kind of selling out the let your book be made into a Hollywood movie?
2005-12-15 16:57:45.0
MichaelBluth: We done Tom
2005-12-15 16:57:46.0
Wonka1996: I hope this is being transcribed. I'd love to read all that I missed.
2005-12-15 16:57:56.0
MichaelBluth: Me too
2005-12-15 16:58:06.0
Arthur Golden: Well...nothing in particular. Thanks for the chance to gab for a bit.
2005-12-15 16:58:10.0
Wonka1996: My final question: Are you working on any other projects right now?
2005-12-15 16:58:29.0
MichaelBluth: Ar eyou
2005-12-15 16:58:34.0
Tom O'Neil: Yes, we'll post the full transcript later. We also have the full transcript of the Cronenberg chat last week.
2005-12-15 16:58:34.0
Arthur Golden: Yes, a novel about a guy who comes over from Amsterdam in the 1860s and becomes a very successful businessman.
2005-12-15 16:58:48.0
MichaelBluth: Ok
2005-12-15 16:59:01.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Are you gonna do research in Amsterdam?
2005-12-15 16:59:09.0
Wonka1996: Can't wait to read it. I love the antebellum era.
2005-12-15 16:59:09.0
Arthur Golden: already done...
2005-12-15 16:59:13.0
Tom O'Neil: Thank you for joining us, Arthur!
2005-12-15 16:59:19.0
Wonka1996: Thanks, Arthur!
2005-12-15 16:59:24.0
Arthur Golden: My pleasure. Thanks for having me, and sayonara.
2005-12-15 16:59:25.0
MichaelBluth: BYe
2005-12-15 16:59:25.0
Ol' Blue Eyesl: Did you like the country?
2005-12-15 16:59:32.0
Wonka1996: One day I'll have to schedule an interview with you for my own publication.
2005-12-15 16:59:38.0
Tom O'Neil: Bye, y'all!
2005-12-15 16:59:44.0
Wonka1996: Best wishes for you.
2005-12-15 16:59:51.0
