Transcript: Our cyberchat with 'Constant Gardener' star Rachel Weisz
Golden Globe and SAG nominee Rachel Weisz says starring in "The Constant Gardener" was a "life changing" experience. In a chat session with our forums posters, she explained, "I have been to Kenya before as a tourist, but I saw a completely different Kenya. We were filming in real locations, a real slum, a real hospital, a real morgue. It has made me want to commit to much more charity work." Now she's helping to build schools there and encourages everyone to pitch in. Rachel wants to star in a comic film next, but the pregnant actress concedes, "My next project seems to be having the baby!" (Special thanks to "VSW" — Diogo Figueira — for editing this transcript plus our Amy Adams chat.)

this role

Rachel Weisz: She was in Kenya. She was a black Kenyan activist who has been living with HIV for 10 years and has been campaigning to get generic
drugs into the county for treatment. She counseled the women of the slum who are HIV positive.

VSW: How do you feel about all the awards attention you have been receiving
for this? How will an Oscar change your career?
hexibar>: congrats on the overwhelming success you've had with this film,
rachel. you're more than deserving.
Rachel Weisz: It's wonderful to be recognized at awards season.
Rachel Weisz: I feel very proud. Also it means that the film gets more attention and the message gets out there.
princess_anya: Is it true you didn't wear makeup in The Constant Gardener?
VSW: yea it's really great.
Rachel Weisz: no makeup
Cal>: wow
Tom O'Neil: did this film cause you to become more politically active?
Kams: Question for Rachel: "How does it feel to finally receive the
recognition you deserve?"
Rachel Weisz: We have started a charity in the name of the film.
Mariana: thats soo good!!
Rachel Weisz: www.constantgardnertrust.org we are building a secondary school in the north of Kenya, have built an elementary school in the slum, and WC facilities and fresh water facilities. Anyone who wants to donate check the site out!!!
Jessestlr: I heard about the charity. That is a truly great thing to do.
Africa really needs to become more of a global priority/
Moviemjk102: that's what a film should do. its amazing that a film like TCG
can change and affect so many lives, especially with this charity
Tome6: rachel what was being in Africa like. Did you meet so many
interesting people
Mariana: rachel, what was your fist impression when you arrived in kenya?
Rachel Weisz: I have been to Kenya before as a tourist, but I saw a completely different Kenya to the one we saw as a film crew. We were filming in real locations, a real slum, a real hospital, a real morgue.
Rachel Weisz: It was a privilege to see the real Kenya and not just to see the beautiful animals on safari.
VSW: Rachel how it was to work with Ralph for a 2nd time after Sunshine? Did
it make things easier? :) And congrats on your amazing performance.
Rachel Weisz: It was lovely to work with Ralph for the second time. He is an incredible actor and it was nice to have some history with him.
cinnie>: Did you learn anything from working with Meirelles?
Rachel Weisz: I think I've learnt from this movie that it is really important to work with very talented directors!
Bank>: Rachel have you watch any performance from the actresse you're
racing against for the golden globe??
portman_kid: what was your favorite movie performance from 2005?
Rachel Weisz: I love Amy Adams in "Junebug" -- I think that was an incredible performance
Kams: Question for Rachel: "What made you want to play Tessa so much?"
Rachel Weisz: I love that Tessa feels that she can make a difference, and has the passion to carry things out.
hexibar>: it's a lovely character...
Rachel Weisz: Mostly in life, we feel the world is too corrupt to take on. But she feels that she can make a difference.
Blue Zeppelin>: Are you similar to Tessa?
TessaQuayleFan>: Tessa Quayle truly is one of the most passionate screen
characters of the last 15 years
Mariana: soo true!!
Rachel Weisz: I am similar in that I am passionate, but I'm an entertainer, not an activist!
Aurens>: Hi Rachel Sorry for jumping in late but I just want to let you
know I've been seeing your work since the Mummies days. :) And I love Tessa.
:)
Cederick: Rachel: How do you feel about Jon Stewart hosting this year's
Academy Awards?
Rachel Weisz: Love Jon Stewart and anything he chooses to do!
Cal>: rachel, do you think that you prefer stronger female roles after
playing gutsy women in both gardener and the mummy?
Rachel Weisz: I have a problem with the notion of "strong" women. Make me think of a woman with dumbbells. One would never say "a strong male character"!
Blue Zeppelin>: What's your next project, after The Foutain?
Rachel Weisz: Next project seems to be having the baby!
RchlWszBrndnFrsr: Which is a film all its own!
Blue Zeppelin>: good one!
Kams: Question for Rachel: "What can we expect from "The Fountain""?
Aurens>: I'm curious. Rachel, what are you thinking right now? I'm
surprised you're doing this at all with us. Must be overwhelming that so
many people are asking you questions at once. :)
Rachel Weisz: "The Fountain" is stunning !
weiszfan>: Rachel - How was it working with Darren Aronofsky?
Rachel Weisz: Darren is an incredible director with a very unusual visions. I loved his style of working. Friendly, but intense.
Tom O'Neil: what actors do you want to work with the most?
Rachel Weisz: I would love to work with Shirley Maclaine.
RchlWszBrndnFrsr: Shirley is brilliant
Rachel Weisz: She is so ahead of me in wisdom and experiences.
Tom O'Neil: what if she beats you at the globes?
Cederick: Rachel: If you could work with any famous screenwriter (Paul
Haggis, for example) who would you choose?
Rachel Weisz: I'd like to work with Stephen Gaghan
Jessestlr: Gaghan is veryy talented
lena>: Do you know that there's a Harry Potter site forum that really wants
you to play Bellatrix Black in the next movie.
Aurens>: Rachel you looks glowing pregnant and all
Rachel Weisz: What's Bellatrix Black like?
Shannon: Bella is a suporter of the Dark Lord who enjoys toruring people
and...torturing people mostly
lena>: She's a dark type of a character, noted for her beauty and, um, her
evilness.
Rachel Weisz: so you think I'm evil?....
lena>: No, not at all. You just have the dark looks and are an extremely
versatile actress.
Buffy>: Rachel, we don't think you're evil, lol, it's just that she's one
of the few powerful female characters of the HP series
gumnutgirl16>: Hi Rachel, The Constant Gardener is one of the most
emotionally charged and beautiful films I have ever seen. My question is -
The movie seemed like it would have been one of those 'life altering' kind
of situations during filming, was this the kind of feeling it was generating
while you were filming? And will you be coming to Australia anytime soon?
Rachel Weisz: Africa was life-changing and has made me want to commit to much more charity work
Rachel Weisz: I have become an ambassdor for the World Food Program
Aurens>: that sounds great
VSW: Rachel, what's your favorite movie of the year?
Rachel Weisz: love "40 Year Old Virgin"
Chris325>: That's awesome Rachel!
Cederick: I heard you were rooting for Steve Carrell! Convince AMPAS members
to mark their ballots for that virgin!!!
Ol' Blue Eyes: You started your career on the stage. Would you like to go
back doing theater?
nancy>: How about doing Macbeth on stage with Ralph........
Rachel Weisz: I was asked to play the Scottish Queen recently, have to wait till after the baby.
nancy>: That would be awesome.....you would make a perfect Lady Macbeth...
Rachel Weisz: I will always continue to do theatre
NateDoggg>: Ms. Weisz, would you ever consider making a light romantic
comedy for a change?
Rachel Weisz: I am also dying to do a comedy
lena>: About a Boy is one of the best movies of all time.
Rachel Weisz: I am developing two comedies right now
Mariana: comedy would be great!!!
Tom O'Neil: rachel has to say goodbye.
Dealah>: Good luck at the Oscars, Rachel!
Aurens>: i'm rooting for you at the oscars rachel
