More than 400 fans of "Brokeback Mountain" have raised over $16,000 to run a full-page ad in Variety, congratulating the cast and crew on its success while citing its many best picture awards from 23 groups, ahem, other than the Oscars. The drive was organized by Denver blogger Dave Cullen at his website.

i'm so glad for you nice, catholic girls. hey. did you see BBM? or did the priest forbid it?

LAUGHING OUT LOAD. The only ones that continue to keep the "Brokeback Mountain" issue alive, as you say, is the gay community and the gay website pundits and the sore losers who aren't willing to relent and who continue to claim to know more of what makes a good film than the rest of us. Quit fooling yourselves. " Brokeback Mountain" is ALREADY a forgotten entity and a film that will soon be collecting dust as it sits in the GAY section of the video stores. I mean this film "Brokeback" only won Director, Screenplay and Music Score which it didn't deserve to win. . How pathetic a showing is this. Really pathetic. On the other hand "CRASH" won Best Picture, Best screenplay, Best Editing. WOW. Quite a good showing. I say.
saltydog, I am NOT gay,i am an heterossexual girl, i am from a very catholic family and i fell for Brokeback, here in Brazil is the movie that EVERYBODY is talking about, even in my very small city the theaters are sold out, even men are going to wacth, wicht let me tell you is a huge sign of the sucess of the movie. So isnt just the gay section of comunity.
The media here still cant believe the film lost best picture, they blame homophobia and several newspapers put articles about.
BTW crash was a dissater in box office here

Crash who? Seems like a week later we've already forgotten about Crash. The Brokeback phenomenon continues to evolve.

Way back in December, when the mighty Brokeback got robbed for their by far the best review original song this year “A Love That Will Never Grow Old” by the Academy for some stupid reasons, I had this feeling that the Academy don’t really cherish the movie. But I refused to believe it in anyway, because all the amazing bunch of kudos and buzz that the movie have received, and honestly it’s one of those most emotional driving movie I have seen in years. Then, on the nomination day, it got snubs again in the editing category and that really prove more concretely the thought I have before. But still I think there’s nothing strong enough to beat it even the Crash buzz is growing strong. And at the Oscar night when the thought of mine came true , that really torn my heart into pieces. Is like another scar that will never heal properly and left there forever.
Really Crash’s win is not so bad, but Brokeback certainly deserve it more !!!!

Worldwide, "Crash" had only one tenth of the critical acclaim and awards that "Brokeback Mountain" had. In all of film history, NEVER has a film with 24 "Best Picture" awards, such as "Brokeback Mountain," not received the "Best Picture" Oscar from the Academy. Also, NEVER has a film with such poor reviews and so few other awards as "Crash" ever gotten a "Best Picture" Oscar. This happened because (1) the Academy lets members vote on films without watching them, and (2) Academy members said they voted AGAINST "Brokeback Mountain" by voting FOR "Crash." The Academy has no professional credibility, and has abandoned artistic integrity so it could embrace homophobia.

And this is why Brokeback will always be a filmic force of nature and the other, eventually, will crash and burn into obscurity. Great job.

I think it is sweet to thank the artists involved. But, I think it is more important to say,out loud, that this movie was not given the top award because of its treatment of Gay people. Hollywood does not like to put in mainstream movies anything that shows Gays as normal human beings. Since I think BBM is the best movie in the last 50 years, and most Gay movies (and most movies) just plain suck these days, I don't expect there to be another opportunity soon to honor a great movie with normal Gay charachters in it with an Oscar. But, whether you liked BBM or not, it is really hard to argue with the facts that all precursers pointed to BBM and that there was a whisper campaign in Hollywood to vote for Crash as an alternative to the "Gay Cowboy" movie.
I believe that saying what I beleive is the truth is important. Yes, thank you BBM team that you made a Courageous and Great move--but also damn you Hollywood for your obvious Homophobia. I realize that I am a strange New Yorker to most of the country and that most of my weltenschauung doesn't always coincide with the everyone in the country. (The best thing that happened to me all week is that a couple of days ago a friend of mine sent songs from the holocaust on ushmm.org.) It is one of those things that we know a crime happened and no one wants to talk about it, even though a huge number of people suspect it: A majority of people in New York City believe that W knew 9/11 was going to happen before it happened; Democrats won Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004; JFK was shot by more than 1 person; Wellstones plane didn't go down because there was ice on its wings in the winter in Minnesota; the intelligence related to WMD's in Iraq was fixed. BBM is just as suspect and just as important as the rest. Culture matters in our society. This effects society.
Tom, I owe you an apology. I love your blog and I loved reading what and how you write. I thought you were just trying to make trouble by suggesting that Crash might win and you allowed me to write negative comments about your thought process on your blog. You were right and I was wrong. I misjudged you. Crash did have more support than I thought and you wrote the truth.,

VanHelsing, that is the most pathetic comment that has been posted on here. Why should Oscar voters not have to 'follow the crowd'. They should be voting for what's best, not to stand out! I am tired of Crash supporters having nothing meaningful to say, except for nasty comments. I guess it's all part of what homophobia is about. The stats speak for themselves: Brokeback Mountain is the only film since the Guild awards were established to be treated in this disgraceful, cowardly way. Tony Curtis - stay in your closet because if you are representative of the many homophobic gay actors in Hollywood, we'd rather you carry on your pretense. Your membership should be stripped for admitting that you did not watch BBM.

Wow, and it's tactful too. No bitterness and all, just a sincere thank you.
Good job Dave and those who participated.

The Oscar snub will never diminish the significance this film has had -- and continues to have -- for gay and straight enthusiasts alike.

This campaign is moving and terrific. Never 'Crash' will receive this support (even if it is a good film). But BBM is heartwrenching and much more deeper…
