Catch the (Indie) Spirits

March 4, 2006 |  2:45 pm

The Independent Spirit Awards are now under way — or, as they're also known, the anti-Oscars because they honor the best indies, but this year the indies rule the Oscars too, so many of the same films are in the running — more overlap than ever.

But the big showdown isn't between "Brokeback Mountain" and "Crash." They're in separate categories for best feature and best first feature. It's between "Brokeback" and "Capote." Curiously, "Capote" won a few months ago at the Gotham Awards, which are the East Coast version of the Spirits. Now the two Oscar best pic contenders square off again.

Only once has a best picture victor here won at the Oscars, too — "Platoon" back in the 1980s. Some actors have won both, but just a few for the same role, including Frances McDormand ("Fargo"), Hilary Swank ("Boys Don't Cry") and Dianne Wiest ("Bullets Over Broadway"). However, some big Oscar champs lost — like Nicolas Cage ("Leaving Las Vegas") who got beat by Sean Penn ("Dead Man Walking").
