MTV's smoochfest for Jake

"Brokeback Mountain" may have gotten the big kiss-off at the Academy Awards, but, hey, at least the gay cowboys won best lip lock at the MTV prizes where their Oscar-slapped pic went undefeated, scoring two wins for two noms. That was the easiest award of all to predict since voters usually opt for kinky.

Or maybe they just like to get all kissy-faced with Jake Gyllenhaal, who also won the top acting trophy even though he was just considered a supporting player at most other kudos contests. Jake even dealt Reese Witherspoon her first defeat of awards season! However, he couldn't beat his on-screen sweetheart, since poor Heath Ledger wasn't nominated.

No big surprise that "Wedding Crashers" won best pic, although I have a hunch that "40-Year-Old Virgin" wasn't too far off in second place considering those rascally MTV viewers who vote. ("Brokeback" wasn't nommed, but then — nyah, nyah — neither was "Crash.") Personally, I was rooting for "King Kong," but secretly knew that the poor, misunderstood ape is surely doomed forever to miss out on love.

The one big surprise of the night was how men dominated so many vote outcomes. Heck, you'd think the TV Critics of America were doing the voting! Never mind that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are the Lovers of the Moment with their freshly born babe Shiloh all over the news. Alas, they lost best kiss to boy-boy rivals and had to settle on best fight scene! Can divorce be far behind? Oh, that's right, they're not married yet.

The MTV Movie Awards will be telecast on the music channel Thursday at 8:30 p.m. eastern.

Photo: Hey, Jake and Heath actually kissed twice in "Brokeback Mountain" — once in a stairwell and another time by campire — so which smooch did they win for, eh?

Thanks, David - you talking about my site?

You're right, John Beene. That kiss isn't really kinky - except perhaps to Dubya and his cronies now on the march to SAVE THE ALMIGHTY SANCTITY OF HOLY MARRIAGE!

Brokeback mountain is now offically part of the American lexicon. A "small" film released last year over the course of two months is still today a part of the nations "Watercooler" conversation. Not winning the Oscar was tragic, but in the long haul brougt BBM even more acclaim. Thanks to MTV and voters, and several ongoing websites Brokeback mountain may hang on to haunt next years Oscars, (we can only hope). And speaking of web sites, check out
backtobrokeback.com. A wonderful little site.

John says it all for me. Wondrously acted and subtle in all the right places. Heath and Jake's performances were a miracle of acting-- not a single false note or exaggerated sentiment. I'm not even sure they understand what happened or where they found the resources to come up with that. I am forever grateful to them and to Ang for this most humane of films. It changed my world. I'll end with Jake's comment: "Brokeback Mountain is that pure place you take someone that's free of judgment."

i have to agree the reunion kiss was the most passionate kiss i have ever seen in a movie. it was more believable and realistic than any kiss between a man and a woman. you could feel the love pouring off of them, how much they had missed each other and the feelings that had only intensified thru the years they were apart. they deserve every award they have received and should have gotten the oscar.

Heath and Jake winning best kiss just tells me there is hope of a non-judgemental mentality in our youth. Perhaps the academy will wake up to a new day. Anyway the Oscars are for the academy. While award shows like Mtv and Golden Globes are more for the people who watch the movies.
I'd love to see the academy do an on-air phone in vote. Ya'know to compare what the viewers choose and what they choose. I'm sure they don't have the balls to do it! I bet it would boost their ratings though.

As much as I LOVED the stairwell kiss (and I definitely did), I'd have to say that the 2nd tent kiss by campfire was my favorite (especially the part where they were lying down with Jake on top and he leaned down kissing Heath. It was very intimate, slow, and sweet and it played a very nice contrast to their first night in the tent).

What was "kinky" about that kiss, Tom?

Karin is absolutely right. I am older than she by some 10 years and was never a teeny-bopper. In my 50-some years of writing, directing and performing in tv, film and theatre, I have never, ever seen such clean, clear and honest portrayals as these two fine young men turned in for us with this most-honored-film of all time.

Kudos to Heath and Jake and to the MTVers for their excellent choices!

the reunion scene was what they were nominated for. this is one of THE most passionate kisses in film history. i am a 58 yr. old married woman. i am no teeny bopper. i loved this movie and i loved this kiss. i love love. too bad there is so much hate around these days. what is wrong with people loving each other? it isn't anyone else's business.
