Emmy's biggest loser — really?
A poster named "RedRunner" recently revealed a shocking awards fact here at this column while pointing out a mistake I'd made.
For years and years we kudos nuts have blindly accepted a bit of oft-repeated Emmy trivia as being true — that "Dynasty" is the TV award's biggest loser, having had 24 defeats, no wins. Many times I've looked over its list of old nominations at IMDB.com and never noticed a problem. But when I cited that trivia "fact" here, "RedRunner" noted an old "Dynasty" win by costume designer Nolan Miller, who tied Bob Mackie ("Mama's Family") in 1984. IMDB only lists the Mackie win. However, both are listed at the TV academy's awards database (CLICK HERE)
So I posted this question in our message board to enlist the help of award nuts everywhere: hey, so what series is Emmy's biggest loser now? Join our forums dish — CLICK HERE!
Longtime trusty poster "/DS0816" (Dave Suveges) came up with a series snubbed even more times than the slaps allegedly suffered by "Dynasty." Turns out "Newhart" had 25 serial losses between 1982 and 1990! Most tragic of them all was its defeat to "The Wonder Years" for best comedy writing in 1990 for what's "perhaps considered the greatest finale" of all TV series, says DS0816.
In the last episode, aired on May 21, 1990, Vermont innkeeper Newhart got hit in the head by a golf ball and woke up in bed next to Suzanne Pleshette — his wife on his previous series, "The Bob Newhart Show."
Turns out that "Newhart" had just been a bad dream. Certainly, it was an Emmy nightmare.
Photo: "Newhart" was a steady TV viewers' favorite during the 1980s, usually hovering between 12th and 16th in the Nielsen rankings of top 20 shows.
