Yes, Carrie and Natasha qualify as Grammy new artists

October 24, 2006 | 12:29 am

Carrie

A few years ago it suddenly became really tough to predict Grammy nominees for best new artist because candidates were no longer limited to people who made their first professional recordings during the eligibility period. The category now encompassed artists who've been in the biz for years, but just recently emerged into prominence.

Since Grammy's eligibility cut-off date of Sept. 30 just passed, it's time to start predicting nominees who'll be announced on Dec. 7.

Our Grammy forum moderator David Schnelwar ("Guru"), however, was befuddled over whether certain artists can be considered for best new artist. So we submitted our list of questionables to the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and got the answers. (Thanks, Ron Roecker!) Here's what he says about these artists:

Natasha Bedingfield — entered and eligible

Gnarls Barkley — not entered

Pussycat Dolls — entered and eligible

Rihanna — entered and eligible

Snow Patrol — not entered

Carrie Underwood — entered and eligible

Photo: Back in May, Carrie Underwood was voted best new female artist of the year by the Academy of Country Music in addition to pulling off a shockeroo upset for single of the year ("Jesus Take the Wheel"). Next she's up for many top kudos at the Country Music Assocation Awards on Nov. 6.

You listed some good artists when talking about Best New Artist...but where is the love for Blue October? Quite possibly the most original and ground breaking rock artists in a long time...plus they don't sound like everyone else that is out there right now!

One must the consider eligibility period which NARAS follows--example: Oct.1, 2005 through Sept. 30, 2006. So recordings released within these dates are eligible for the 2006 Grammy Awards. Carrie Underwood, James Blunt seem like shoo-ins. Pussycat Dolls would be the ultimate joke even though "Don'cha Wish..." song was a guilty pleasure. Gnarls Barkley's omission is a head-scratcher considering they would be my shoo-in pick. AFI, K.T. Turnstall, Wolfmother, would be stronger entries for Best New Artist. But given NARAS' record we'll end up with mediocre artists vying for this award. And again...dreaded crap from Justin Timberlake will be feted as well come Grammy time...bad enough he's practically shoved down our throats with overexposure...Uuugggghhh!!!

Thank you guys so much for getting the skinny on this issue. A big sigh of relief!

Thanks for keeping us to date with the Grammy stuff TOM O' NEIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really hope Natasha Bedingfield and Carrie make it along with James Blunt, The Fray...

Best New Artist continues to be a joke of a category. If Rhianna is nominated a year after "Pon de Replay" was a million-selling hit, the category will have lost all integrity and might as well just be cancelled by AMPAS.
