On January 16, the Academy will screen clips featuring each song, in random order, for voting members of the Music Branch in both Beverly Hills and New York City. Following the screenings, members will vote to determine which three, four or five songs become nominees in the category.
To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

My favorites are
1. "Definition of Love" from Akeelah and the Bee
2. "Listen" from Dreamgirls
Just wish that I could get a recording of "Definition of Love" by Deborah Cox. But, it was added to the film at the last minute, so the song didn't make the soundtrack. "Definition of Love" is supposed to be on Deborah Cox's next CD and there isn't sheet music available for the song...yet.

Nice to see tracks by Jack Johnson (from "Curious George") and Outkast (from "Idlewild"), plus the "Casimo Royale" theme in the eligibility list. I hope that they (or at least some of them) will make the final nominees list.

My bad. Did some searching (no, I don't use the G-word unless I absolutely have to) and found "Paprika" has already had its LA qualifying run, though it won't open for general release until March 2007:

Pretty weak selection this year. If Dreamgirls turns out to be the Oscar bait so many people think it is I will be shocked if all three songs don't sweep in with this mediocre list.

Notice '"The Girl in Byakkoya - White Tiger Field" from "Paprika"'? I thought "Paprika" was delayed and wouldn't get its qualifying run in, which also reduced the Animated Feature Film nominations from five to three. ????
Slayton: The proper title of that song is "Love You I Do"--no "I" at the beginning--and it IS on the list, as are ALL of the original songs from "Dreamgirls"--"Listen", "Love You I Do", and "Patience". (Just in case some other blowhard jumps in, the other "Dreamgirls" songs came from the Broadway version and are thus ineligible.)

To Slayton:
The song you metioned is titled "Love You I Do" and that song is on the list.

What about "I Love You I Do" for Dreamgirls?
