"Dreamgirls" looks like a real winner at the b.o., far exceeding even the most optimistic projections for its Christmas Day release nationally.
Early high estimates forecast that it might make $6 million while appearing on 852 screens. Instead, it made $8.38 million, according to showbizdata.com. That's $9,836 per screen.
Adding that total to the sum it made in limited engagement during its road show, "Dreamgirls" already has earned $9.53 million! And it just opened! Deena & Girls to the studio suits: "We're your Dreamgirls, boys, we make you happy . . . . "
Congrats to Bill Condon & crew. Oh, what an exciting Oscar derby they — and we kudos nuts — have ahead!

Dreamgirls was awesome! Jennifer Hudson was simply spectacular and she brought tears to my eyes as I watched her take this Jennifer Holiday classic (And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going) to the next level and make it her own. If Eddie Murphy doesn't win, I am simply going to cry! Beyonce was excellent! I have nothing negative to say about the movie except I was sad when it was over. Mr. Condon should get the well deserved Best Director but we shall see. Again, the movie was just AWESOME!!!

I grew up singing Dreamgirls songs, and I saw the live play featuring Jennifer Holiday when I was just16. THIS MOIVE WAS ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENOL!!! The soundtrack alone speaks for itself. They (Foxx, Knowles, Murphy, Hudson) should all receive awards and major acknowledgent for their talent....like the movie says "Dreamgirls will never leave you, all you have to do is dream and we'll be there"

UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Jennifer Hudson was awesome! Eddie Murphy was awesome! Aniki Noni Rose and Beyonce' were awesome!! I cannot believe Bill Condon did not get nominated for Best Director for the Golden Globes! What is wrong with those people! I was so upset when Jennifer was booted from American Idol, but what a blessing it was, as she is a star in every sense of the word, and I hope that when she wins all of the awards that are coming to her that she stays the same, sweet, unassuming, God promoting young woman she is today. She will be a diva, but I hope she doesn't act like one. The BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!!!

I live in Maine, where it doesn't open till Jan. 19th. So my family and I had to travel to New Hampshire to see it. And the almost-all white, sold-out audience loved it, clapping after every Effie song, at the end, and when Jennifer Hudson's name rolled up on the credits.

Boxoffice wise this looks to be huge. When I saw it the audience loved applauded wildly at both "I'm telling you" and the end.
Reports are audiences went repsonded similiarly everywhere. Word of mouth should be amazing.
