Oscar Buzzmeter: 'The Departed' is gaining on 'Dreamgirls'

December 21, 2006 |  7:52 pm

Departedleojack

As of right now, five of our Envelope pundits have piped in on this week's Oscar Buzzmeter, which gives you our experts' latest predix.

"Dreamgirls" used to be far out front for best picture. Now it's merely holding on by a score of three to two. Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Jeff Wells (Hollywood-Elsewhere.com) now predict "The Departed" will win, while Clay Smith ("E.T."/ "The Insider"), Edward Douglas (Comingsoon.net) and I still believe "Dreamgirls" will prevail.

Travers and Wells now say Leo DiCaprio will win best actor for "Departed." Smith and I still say O'Toole. Douglas says Forest Whitaker("Last King of Scotland").

To see the Buzzmeter, CLICK HERE! Then remember to look for the link for "Individual Panelists' Rankings" — that'll give you the chart showing you our individual predix. The composite rankings on the homepage may have changed by the time you read this, being different from the report above because it changes all the time as more of our gurus pipe in, some even switching horses in midtrack.

Good news for all of you Pete Hammond fans (count me among them). That savvy Oscarologist promises to join us finally with his predix, which may be posted by the time you read this. He's held off till now because, well, he's a scaredy-cat, a wimp, a wus (naw, just tyring to get a rise outta him as he reads this). "Even though Dreamgirls shows up in (5) separate categories for the Golden Globe awards, I also believe that Eddie Murphy nominated for “Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture” will have real competition from Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg in “The Departed”"

You have to remember when it comes to these polls that most people won't have seen Dreamgirls yet. It's only played in three theatres in three cities for the last few weeks. I think when people actually SEE Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls they may understand why he's considered such a challenge for Jack (who has been the favorite for a few months)

Gaining??

It's clear that The Departed has been AHEAD of Dreamgirls ever since the latter film began screenings a few weeks ago and failed to make much of dent (other than Jennifer Hudson) in the precursors.
