Oscars won't 'Listen' to Beyonce; she's disqualified in song race

January 2, 2007 |  3:07 pm

You can not only forget about Beyonce Knowles winning an Oscar for best actress this year. (If you haven't heard, a certain ingenue keeps upstaging her throughout "Dreamgirls." And in the race for best comedy/musical actress at the Globes, she's up against a real devil — Meryl Streep — who knows a lot about winning that award.) Now it looks like Beyonce won't win an Oscar as a songwriter either — for "Listen," one of the original new tunes added to the original Broadway score. Officially, she's listed as one of the song's four writers, but the motion-picture academy only permits three names — max — as a credit. To see the specific language of its Rule 16 — CLICK HERE!

Oscar Rule 16 is fairly new, by the way. At the 2003 derby, seven people were cited as cowriters of "Accidentally in Love" from "Shrek 2." In 1981, four folks won for writing "'Arthur's' Theme." Oscar guru Wayman Wong asserts that limiting the number of songwriters to three "is kinda arbitrary," adding, "The Oscars, of course, give out four Oscars in other categories, like visual effects and sound." However, the academy does limit the number of producers who get credit for best picture to three in its Rule 17 CLICK HERE.

The Oscars' songwriting branch has decided to qualify only Henry Krieger, Anne Preven and Scott Cutler for writing "Listen." No explanation is given for why Beyonce is excluded over the others. Is this just one of those cases of where the singer insisted upon having her name added to credits as part of her performance deal? In media interviews, she's often said that she was truly involved in its songwriting. Apparently, not to the extent as her three collaborators, according to the Oscars.

Notice some info posted in the "Comments" section of this blog piece — from poster named Nick. He provides a link to an article about the writing of "Crazy in Love," which earned Beyonce and cohorts the Grammy for best R&B song of 2003, an award bestowed to songwriters. CLICK HERE to read what her actual involvement was in its composition. In fact, it notes that she wrote the song's bridge section. Thanks for adding this insight and link, Nick!

Take heart, Beyonce fans. Not only is she nominated in the actress race at the Globes, but she'll be among the people who share the credit for "Listen" if it wins best song there. And it probably will.

Black people, white people, just people in general give it up for all of the actors and actresses in this movie. It is an all-star cast of beautiful black people who are working, living, and having fun. Who the hell is anyone to judge I mean damn its not like they are out here selling drugs, they are just entertaining and promoting a positive image. WHO REALLY GIVES A DAMN IF BEYONCE CAN'T ACT. At least she has a positive imput to the movie, she is the star, so obviously the director thought differently. I saw this....GIVE IT UP FOR MY GIRL B SHE KILLED IT. AND PLUS if you pay attention in the movie...Curtis told Deena that he chose her to be the lead because her voice had no personality. Which it may well enough be a bad thing, but in all honesty why do you think they chose her for the role. In my opinion she acted the shit out of Deena's part...it wasn't supposed to be HALLE material damn Deena was a simple ass woman from Detroit, lost in a dream...GET FUCKIN REAL YA'LL HIT ME UP ON MYSPACE...only1marquay. it was real -100-

Beyonce may have "helped" in the song writing process. Based on her last albulm, i doubt she wrote that song by herself. The people taking the credit probably did most of the work. If she deserved credit then she would get it, Plain and Simple. Besides if anybody truly paid attention to the movie yall would see she broke her character singing that song. The song is nice but he character didnt have a voice like that to sing that song. Instead of see'n Deena singing, i saw Beyonce and thats not good acting at all. She knew Jennifer had the best song in the musical and wanted something as big. Lets just say, she still aint get 2 Jennifer's level at all. LOL. Oh and one more thing, Beyonce really cant act. If you pay attention to her films, she only plays one character, A SINGER. Thas not real acting at all because its not a strectch at all for her. Im sure her next film she will probably be singing also, LOL.

I read some of these comments, which means B must be doing her job, because its a late of hating going on .lol

Personally, I don't think Beyonce can act, She need to stick with singing. Jennifer Hudson is giving her a run for her money. First of all Beyonce does not deserve an Oscar for this movie. There are plenty of Actresses who deserve it more. Maybe next time. If you ask me Will Smith son, (Pursuit of Happiness) should get an Oscar before Beyonce, Lil man can act. It seems that she is forcing herself to do something that she does not have talent in. Only a hand few of singers can turn actors or actresses. Beyonce you are not one of those people. I do have to give it to her, she can sing her butt off, but sometimes that is not enough. So what if she doesn't get her props for the song "Listen" IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!!!!!!! Oh and the comments that was made about the way she talks, I'm offended, I'm from Houston, but I do understand, because Jaime Foxx is from Terrell, Tx right out side of Dallas, and he doesn't talk like that. I guess ya'll right..LOL

look-it's not hatin on her-it's a fact.that is just a rule.u can't go getting all upset over a rule that was put into existance long before the song was even written.it's as simple as that.and what makes people think that just because she's beyonce that everything has to go her way and that the rule should be broken for her.they don't have anything personal against the girl-they let her sing three songs at the oscars that one time didn't they.and to pull out the race card on something so trivial as entertainment? not good for us.

I finally saw Dreamgirls and I think Beyonce's performance was definitely better than previous movies she has acted in. JHud was okay in the movie as well. The entire movie is worth going to see. As far as "Listen" I don't know what the deal is with that. I know that it is a very deep song. Could it have been written by Beyonce? If you take into account her lyrics from the latest album, De Ja Vu, than I would say that it could be a definite NO. She clearly does not need to be in the "Best Actress" category. But still a great movie! As far as her literacy--she's rich--obviously money don't discriminate by how dumb a person really is. Her father is definitely a sore spot when it comes to her career. If she doesnot shake him, he will be her downfall. Its known that he was essential in her success when she first started out, but now it is time to spread her wings.

PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY BLACK FOLKS ALWAYS HATING ON EACH OTHER. WHITE PEOPLE DON'T TRIP LIKE THAT. STOP HATIN ON THAT GIRL (BEYONCE) . IT'S LIKE DAMN IF SHE DO, DAMN IF SHE DON'T PEOPLE ARE STILL GOING TO TALK ABOUT THIS GIRL. SO IT DON'T MATTER WHAT SHE DOES. I SAW THE MOVIE DREAMGIRLS AND I THINK SHE DID AN EXCELLENT JOB. WHETHER SHE WROTE THE SONG "LISTEN" OR NOT, SHE SANG THE HELL OUT OF IT. NOW IF WE WOULD ADMIT I'M SURE IT'S SOMETHING ABOUT EACH AND ONE OF US THAT HAD SOMETHING NEGATIVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS GIRL WE CAN FIND SOMETHING WRONG WITH US. EITHER WE DIDN'T FINISH SCHOOL, CAN'T READ OR WRITE, PERHAPS OR EVEN SPEAK WELL OUR OWNSELVES. CAUSE I KNOW ME, MYSELF SPLIT NOUNS AND VERBS AND I'M NOT THAT ARTICULATE. BUT I DO WELL WE ALL WON'T TO THINK THAT WE'RE BETTER THAN THE NEXT PERSON. THA'TS JUST LIFE. WE CAN NEVER GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DO. MOST OF THE TIME WE BE WISHING IT WAS US IN THAT PERSON SHOES. THINK ABOUT IT, IF YOU WERE FAMOUS OR A CELEBRITY YOU'LL GET TALK ABOUT TOO. WHAT SINGER, RAPPER. ACTOR OR ACTRESS DON'T GET TALK ABOUT. EVEN WILL AND JADA ONE OF THE MOST FASINATING COUPLES THAT HAVE MANAGED TO KEEP THAT MARRIAGE TOGETHER GET TALKED ABOUT. "OH I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THEIR MARRIAGE IS ALL THAT." " YOU CAN'T BE THAT HAPPY IN A MARRIAGE." "EVERYBODY HAS PROBLEMS." ALL WELL SAID AND DONE. BUT THE THING ABOUT WILL AND JADA THEY WORK AT THEIR MARRIAGE. THEY MAKE IT WORK. ON BOTH PARTS. IT CAN'T BE ONESIDED. WHEN YOU GET MARRIED YOU BECOME ONE. YOU'RE NO LONGER TWO. AND MAYBE THAT'S THE PART OF THE VOW THAT THEY BOTH UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT REALLY MEAN. WELL I SAID ALL THAT TO SAY IF YOU CAN'T SAY ANYTHING GOOD ABOUT SOMEONE, THEN DON'T SAY NOTHING AND THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE FAMOUS.

You got's to be kidding me. Beyonce' deserve that Award and the people of the "Oscars" know it. If she wrote parts of it which I believe she did they need to give her some credit. The only reason why they want to exclude her is because they know "Listen" will beat all of those other dry songs. What I really think (and they might not post this) I think they exclude her name because she is an African-American realistic how may African- Americans win an "Oscar". Not may! And most of the time other than last year "3 six Mafia" winning the "Oscar" some old White person with a dry song win. Beyonce deserve this Award and it should be given to her with no dam EXCUSSES.

Hey Hey Hey.....I know that "If you haven't heard, a certain ingenue keeps upstaging her throughout Dreamgirls." is not Jennifer Hudson. Great and True talent is not called upstaging. When Hudson belt out And I Am Telling You she got a standing ovation in the movie theater I went to. Beyonce's Listen is good but the real star is JHud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shes fabulous. get over it!

beyonce's voice is amazing and jennifer hudson has an amazing voice too but hers(Jennifer Hudson's) voice gets so annoying. everyone i was with at dreamgirls just wanted her to stop singing after a while it was just like, we get it u can sing the crap out of a song. she doesn't make her songs very listener friendly. her acting was pretty impressive although we all know her character was pretty easy to do, there was no suddelty needed thats for sure. beyonce just isn't getting any credit because she's so mainstream that people forget how talented she is.

Well this sure burst Beyounce's bubble...if she only contributed very little to the song then the Academy is correct under its new rule and she should not get full recognition. Also under the Academy's rule for Best Original Song Brokeback Mountain's "A Love That Will Never Grow Old" didn't qualify because it only played in the movie for like 15-20 seconds and it was scantily heard in the scene where Jack is tearfully heartbroken driving to Mexico. It did win the Golden Globe though. So Beyounce will just have to settle for a Globe. As for Ms. B., she has the vocal talent, the looks, the hair, the figure, but her acting needs more work. If she's really serious about acting than singing, she can polish it up and then get the recognition and respect for it. But if Daddy Dearest is pulling the strings all the time, then no one will take her seriously as an actress. Time to cut Daddy loose Ms. B. even if you are his bread & butter girl!

I really think that if you didnt write the song you didnt write the song, simple as that. B gets so much credit for doing other things that she has nothing to do with that this shouldnt matter if (from the word of Jay- Z) " you just lost one ". This award doesnt change her records sales or other movie deals. These are just the rules for the award program not a conspiracy. People are so quick to blame the truth on someone else that they look totally stupid when its was written before they came along and will be there when they leave. Chill out honey you will get another chance "write your own song, they will vote for you again. " lol.

I think Beyonce is a talented ,beautiful, young women. However, I feel that a real educated person with plain common sence will detect that she has no acting skils what-so ever. She is eye-candy for the guy and she is a good singer. I truly feel that her parents are pushing for titles were she had nowhere met her dues. Beyonce is a great singer and she should stick with that and if I was her advisor, I would stongly encourage her on taking speech lesson instead of talking like she was freed from slavery two days ago.

My understanding of the rule change is to honor the songwriters who make a substantial contribution to the song and weed out those who put their name on the credits because it's in a contract or they claim their contribution is massive (though it might have been just one line). The rule was mostly changed to keep all the members of a rock band from putting their name on the song and subsequently getting a nomination for writing maybe five seconds of music.

Examples include U2 and Counting Crows. Especially Counting Crows. Only six times in the past 25 years have there been more than three credited songwriters on a nominated song, and they all make pretty good cases for limiting the number to three:

1981: Arthur's Theme (four writers). Peter Allen famously contributed "When you get caught between the moon and New York City" after finding the lyric in a trunk and I don't know how much Christopher Cross contributed.

1994: Look What Love Has Done (four writers). Did Patty Smyth make a significant contribution, or did she just get a credit for a little polish she did, or was it the only way they'd get her to sing the song?

1996: I Finally Found Someone (four writers). Robert Lange was a songwriting partner of Bryan Adams, so his contribution was probably major. I think Streisand's love theme was a major part of the song. Wonder how much Adams and Lange put in.

1998: The Prayer (four writers). In this case, all the writers made significant contributions. The two Italian writers translated the English chorus to Italian and supplied another verse.

2002: The Hands That Built America (four writers). I thik I read somewhere that The Edge and Bono do most of the writing. But it's probably a package deal.

2004: Accidentally in Love (seven writers). It took all six of the Counting Crows and another guy to crank this out? Doubtful.

I don't feel sorry for Beyonce. If she wants an Oscar, she should actually write a song. If Barbra Streisand and Irene Cara can do it, she can.

I think the rule is good.

I agree that her father probably had something to do with it, but I'm sure she still had to contribute something. I doubt she came up with any of the lyrics or actual musical composition, but everyone can agree that she's known for all those tacky cadenzas, arpeggios, leaps, and runs with her voice, so maybe she considers that "songwriting." To me, it merely qualifies as embellishing or a bit improv, but all of that fancy voicework she does in the song may not have appeared in the original compositions-- it may be the small bit that she contributed to the song. As far as talent, she has it vocally-- I mean she can carry a tune well, but her voice is thin and has no body compared to J-Hud's. She had a couple of fleeting moments in Dreamgirls that almost qualified as decent acting, but she left a lot to be desired in the acting department. Sometimes her face looked so empty when it should have been full of emotion. It was pretty frustrating to watch.

ok, so she wont win an Oscar but he HAIRINAMINUTE.COM weave looks great

Personally, I think Beyonce is fantastic. I love her voice and music performances. However, even I have to admit... Beyonce doesn't act very well. She's not the worst mind you, but not quite Oscar material YET. Jennifer Hudson was simply amazing in Dreamgirls, she truly can act and sing (hard to believe she's a newcomer, really)... If anyone deserves a Best Actress Nomination for that film.. It's her.

With regard to the song "Listen," I don't know who wrote it, and don't care. It is, however, Beyonce's one shining moment in the film and she sings the hell out of it.

Love you Beyonce, keep doing what you're doing, and if you manage to take acting and an English course, you will be that much more amazing.

Qu Elle U sound like a refugee yourself...how do have the audacity to say beyonce can't speak english..are you on crack?..u sure sound like it...you prolly just mad that u will never be as pretty, rich or as talented as beyonce...so stop haitin u F.O.B

Okay, some folks really need to stop hating on Beyonce. From what I understand, she does write most of her own material. Perhaps she didn't contribute to the song, but IF she did (I don't care if it was just one verse), she deserves writing credit and should be nominated. Personally, this sounds like some funky technicality, for which the Academy is infamous for.

I'm sure Beyonce will have class and perform the song on the telecast; however, if she really wanted the be a beyotch, the Academy can always bring in Celine Dion to sing the song.

And for the record, Beyonce is talented despite what some of you here have said. Granted, she's not a great actress to be warranted a nomination but she's not terrible either. However, the bread and butter is that she can sing and dance, that she can do and I doubt many of you can't!

Asia....that was a dumb ass comment.. u know good and well Beyonce can sing ..... acting well I am not too sure about I have to see dreamgirls... but she definitely can sing and u people talking about her literacy damn the hate is steaming off my computer screen........ can't find anything else to say huh? just live and let live!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I have to comment. I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but lets face it. It's NOT Beyonce's world, people. Do you all read Entainment Weekly? Well, in the field in which I work, I have to in order to see if our ads run correctly. In doing so, I read how Beyonce and her people bum-rushed and demanded that the Director not audition anyone for that role until they saw her first??!!! What balls! But I understood. Beyonce knew that there was a good chance that someone else could have easily had that role if the Director had auditioned others before seeing her. Also, could it be that her parents wanted the movie edited because it reflected too much of what really happened to Beyonce's original group, Destiny's Child? That's what it reminded me of. There's a saying, "what goes around comes right back around to you". Sit back and relax, Beyonce. You still have a whole lot to learn in tha game - and you can seriously use an acting coach. You have to be able to adapt to different facets of acting. Take Halley Berry. When she played Samuel Jackson's crack-head girlfriend in Jungle Fever, she didn't take a bath for four days before filming her parts. THAT'S a true actress. Beyonce did nothing but play... well, herself in this movie. That's not acting, luv.

Her oversaturation in the media is what has people tired of her. I like her as an artist-she's is entertaining. However, I do not look to her to be a great conversationalist becuase she's an entertainer- that's like expecting a Harvard grad to be able to sing in front of millions of people and shake their moneymaker.

"Let Beyonce go sit down ! Why does she think she deserves an acting award for singing?!???"

Um, isn't that what's happening with Jennifer Hudson? Between songs in Dreamgirls, there was nothing special at all about her acting; just acting like another angry black woman. Both she and Beyonce are singers playing singers. Really, neither of them should be up for any awards for that. But, I can see it's just popular to pick on Beyonce.

Beyonce started irritating me ever since Latoya Luckett and the other girl left the group. I believe their stories about her and her parents. I just think she is way too phony and nothing that I hear about her surprises me anymore. As for Kelly, she just follows her. I feel sorry for Michelle she always looked like the odd one out!
