Chandra just made a SAG breakthrough

January 28, 2007 |  6:24 pm

It's such a colorful SAG show! Chandra Wilson just became the first African-American to win a SAG award for a solo performance on a TV series ("Grey's Anatomy"). That, plus Eddie Murphy's victory and the win by Latino America Ferrera — this is a racially diverse kudos night!

While I don't begrudge anyone a little recognition, I personally feel that these awards shows are just a popularity contest, with the award going to whichever actor is on whichever show is the hottest topic at the time. Witness the Golden Globes, the Emmys, and the SAGs this past year. Almost every female nominee on these shows has come from Desperate Housewives or Grey's Anatomy, with most of the awards going to those shows. But PATRICIA ARQUETTE, who won the Emmy in 2005, has been nominated two years in a row and still hasn't won a Golden Globe or a SAG, instead losing to the likes of Sandra Oh, Chandra Wilson, and Felicity Huffman. Not to take anything away from those women, I feel that the awards are handed out based on whose show gets the most attention from the media, which begs the question. Does ABC have every journalist on the North Continent in their pocket?, because their shows are all the media wants to talk about. But a show like MEDIUM, which is one of the best-written shows on television with a phenomenal group of actors, gets no recognition from the media or from Hollywood mainstream. I guess it's just a little too edgy for them. It's a shame, because they're missing a fantastic show with an incredible performance every week from Ms. ARQUETTE. I just hope they figure it out soon and give this actress, and the show, the respect they so richly deserve.

I hope I'm not the only one who is getting tired of the "minority report" every time someone other than a Caucasian wins some type of award! And before anyone says anything, I am NOT Caucasian!

Why can't a person's achievement just be celebrated without pointing out "Ooh! Wow! That's one for African-Americans, or Latins, or Asians...."

I was just thrilled to see Chandra Wilson win because she is GREAT! That should be enough.

And the quip about the "one in rehab" cast mate was the line of the show.

Eriq LaSalle (e.r.), Gloria Reuben (e.r.), James McDaniel (NYPD Blue), Lisa Nicole Carson (Ally McBeal), Dule Hill (West Wing), Mathew St. Patrick (Six Feet Under), Gary Dourdan (CSI), Mehcad Brooks (Desperate Housewives), Alfre Woodard (Desparate Housewives), Malcolm David Kelly (Lost), and Harold Perrineau (Lost) will all be surprised to hear that.

Why should I have waited? They don't count regarding the TV awards -- that's the record broken. TV SERIES awards for a SOLO perf.

What, Tom? You couldn't wait for Jennifer Hudson and now Forest Whitaker to win?
