Does Alan Arkin = Henry Fonda?

January 23, 2007 |  5:47 pm

It's been 38 years since Alan Arkin's last Oscar nom, which was for "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" (1968). Previously, he'd been nommed for "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming!" Is there a parallel to his situation and Henry Fonda's who won for "On Golden Pond 41 years after his previous nomination.

I really think Arkin can win and I love that you believe in him too. I think he is more aligned with those character actors who score in this category ALL THE TIME. Basically:

Alan Arkin = Jack Palance.

Henry Fonda is comparable to someone else:

Peter O'Toole = Henry Fonda/Paul Newman/Geraldine Page/Al Pacino

Don't you agree?

Arkin's chances are good if the Academy really goes on an anti-Dreamgirls campaign and snub Eddie Murphy for good measure. Or if the Academy is still having orgasms over Little Miss Sunshine, then Mr. Arkin can rest assure he's a lock to win. I'd rather see Eddie take the gold or Jackie Earle Haley for the wonderful LITTLE CHILDREN. Well we can always expect a Marcia Gay Harden moment--Mark Wahlberg ends up the winner--I'm shocked, shocked I say!

Arkin? Not unless Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris are now in the Witness Protection Program (figuratively, that is), as Bruce Beresford was for "Driving Miss Daisy". Otherwise, "Little Miss Sunshine" will join "The Color Purple" and "The Prince of Tides" as big Oscar nominees that lost over stinks about not getting a Best Director nom. (Ironically, "Dreamgirls" was spared the same fate by NOT being nominated for Best Picture.) Besides, Oscar isn't as sentimental as it used to be; see my comment on the O'Toole post.

Does Peter O'Toole = Henry Fonda... it's about time too
