Robert Osborne, host of Turner Classics Movies TV channel and columnist for the Hollywood Reporter, knows his Oscars. He's the author of the official book on the Academy Awards and is the official host of the Oscar red carpet, having recently replaced Variety's Army Archerd. Check out our podcast chat in which he says more than a few surprising things.

For starters: about the movie ahead in the best-pic race. It's off with the heads of "Babel," "Departed," "Dreamgirls" and "Little Miss Sunshine"! Robert sees "The Queen" reigning in the top race. And he thinks Peter O'Toole's ship has probably sailed, and sunk. Listen up — CLICK HERE!

I agree with this assessment because BABEL is a complex movie and not really a commercially accessible and dour film--too bold for the Academy's taste for Best Pic. DREAMGIRLS is commercially box office boffo although critically mixed. It's chances are strong but can find itself cancelled out with the other possible entries such as THE DEPARTED and (hopefully it won't make the top 5 selections) LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE or whatever entry enters the 5th slot for Best Pic. So THE QUEEN has a possible chance of squeezing through for the win. Also you have your stodgy, stuffy Academy members who love stuffy, stodgy British films and vote properly...oh my! I wouldn't knock Peter O'Toole out just yet...unless Ryan Gosling gets a nod for HALF NELSON then Peter can just stay in London or wherever come Oscar night...but then again sentimentality might rain in and the Academy will finally give ole Peter his long overdue acting Oscar and also again the Academy's stuffy, stodgy members love anything British....God Save THE QUEEN!
