Razzies blow kisses to Stone

While we gear up to celebrate the best of filmmaking tomorrow when Oscar nominations are announced, let us take a minute today to remember the worst, make that wurst, movies of 2006 with the announcement of the Razzie nominations. No surprise that the folks at the Golden Raspberry Foundation thought so little of Sharon Stone that she was nommed as Worst Actress for “Basic Instinct 2” (up for seven awards including Worst Picture).

Savvy pundits in our forums (CLICK HERE) were predicting this dubious distinction back in November. I was surprised that her breasts made the list for Worst Screen Couple as I thought they have held up quite nicely, though they do tend to overact. Last fall I defended “Superman Returns” which escaped unscathed but for the nod for Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. M. Night Shyamalan must be applauded for proving himself to be the Warren Beatty of Razzies with four nods for directing himself speaking words he had written in a picture he produced — "Lady in the Water".

Two years ago, Oscar winner Halle Berry showed that she was a good sport (and had a smart publicist) when she surprised us all by accepting her award for “Catwoman” (co-starring Stone) in person. Oscar winners in the running this year are Nicolas Cage for “Wicker Man”, Sir Ben Kingsley for “Bloodrayne”, and Ron Howard for directing “The Da Vinci Code”. Will any of these winning losers show up at the Ivar Hotel in LA on February 24 (the night before the Oscars) to collect their Golden Raspberry?

Photo: "The laughs to be had in this deliciously awful sequel are all unintentional," said Peter Travers in his Rolling Stone review of "Basic Instinct 2." "Credit Stone, 48, for getting in knockout shape for this vanity project. And she can act (see "Casino"), she just doesn't choose to do it here. Instead she loads up every line with sexual innuendo and plays Catherine as a predator who sits around her flat in heels, tight skirt and full makeup waiting for drop-ins."
