The Globe no-shows: Petered out

January 16, 2007 |  2:12 am

At least Marcia Cross had a good excuse for not being at the Globes tonight — she's got those pregnancy priorities.

And now I feel (a bit) bad about making that nasty prediction that Johnny Depp would run out the door the minute he'd lose to Sacha Baron Cohen, recalling the shocking sprint he made upon losing his bid for the first "Pirates of the Caribbean." Turns out that he really ran the other way a while back, the day he got his Globe invite.

The absence of Mel Gibson and Judi Dench is especially sad. As noted below, the Globes put Mel on the kudos map a few years ago. The Hollywood Foreign Press has been exceptionally generous to Judi, giving her prizes for her film work in "Mrs. Brown" and TV work in "The Last of the Blonde Bombshells." Frankly, they sure look like ingrates to me right now.

Since I wrote those words above, I've been taken to task by posters here (click "Comments" link below) who note that Dame Judi was busy performing in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of "The Merry Wives of Windsor" in Stratford-Upon-Avon, which may seem like a good excuse. Many other Globe and Oscar nominees through the years, however, have been in a similar situation and made arrangements to be excused for a few days. Others chose not to. Judi is not alone. Let's recall how Anne Bancroft stuck it out on Broadway the night she won an Oscar 3,000 miles away for "The Miracle Worker," for example. In Judi's case, come to think of it, she's such a serious, classical thespian that it probably makes sense that she might sincerely believe that her theater duty is a higher priority. Her spokesman adds, "She committed over a year ago to the play and she refused to let down an audience that is expecting her to perform (not a stand-in) when the play had such a finite amount of performances. We tried to accommodate and move heaven and earth, but it would have killed too many performances and the play is just about to end." OK, OK. I concede the point and apologize to the great dame. Memo to Mel: you're still ungrateful.

And as for Peter O'Toole, well, Ye Olde Rascal has not exactly been the most accessible kudos contender so far this year. Back in September, he ditched the Toronto Film Festival at the last sec, citing a case of "gastric nasties." Last week he managed to make it to New York to do ballyhoo on TV talk shows for "Venus," but at that point the press chiefs didn't know what day he'd get to L.A. for Globes, only that he wouldn't arrive in time for Friday's Critics' Choice Awards. As of last Wednesday, he was still scheduled to head west and many of kudos-watchers believed his arrival in L.A. would matter much.

When I sat with Variety's #2 editor Steve Gaydos over din-din at the Critics Choice Awards on Friday, Steve said, "Sure, things look fine for Forest Whitaker right now, but — watch out! — everything changes tomorrow the minute Peter O'Toole's plane touches down in Los Angeles!"

But a Miramax rep tells Gold Derby: "Unfortunately O'Toole flew back to london on Saturday. He was exhausted after his crazy press schedule in New York and didn't have it in him to come here. If we get the Oscar nom, he will come."

So perhaps there is hope for Oscar's biggest loser yet.

Photo: After making a vigorous PR tour in New York, O'Toole was too tuckered out to attend the Globes, but promises to tubthump in Hollywood if he's nominated for an Oscar. (Miramax)

Here's an award. By the way, you're now obligated to attend all our future award shows when nominated. Failure to do so will result in you being labelled an ingrate. Crikey Tom, you don't do yourself any favours do you?! Come on man, you are capable of much more than petty and self--righteous proclamations.

Even if Judi Dench was sitting at home in her bathtub, why would she want to fly 6,000 miles to go to a second tier awards show, for an award she knows shes not going to win (she probably reads Gold Derby too!). If it weren't for Helen Mirren, she'd be sweeping the awards and critics curcuit for her brilliant turn in "NOAS". But alas, not this year.

As for Mel, I wouldn't have gone if I were him either. How many Jews were in the banquet hall who would have been shooting daggers at him with their eyes?

Tom, now, now... must'nt get too peevish about things. After all, there's plenty more to get peeved about at the "new" LA Times. Just think... you could have Matt Welch's job and get ton more whiners to deal with on a daily basis!

Old Peter is just petered out...give the old guy a break...and being down the awards route many times before and losing...I guess Ole Peter could really give a rats about them anymore. As for Judi...well if she couldn't make it to the Globes, there's always the Oscar. And if she cannot attend that then leave her be...she has her reasons. And btw, glad to see Little Miss Sunshine go empty handed at the Globes...I loathe over-hyped, mediocre, little indies such as this....And does Justin Timberlake (eeewww!) need to appear at every awards show? I can't stand no talent celebrities such as he who practically overexposes himself thru the media--choking us to death with many appearances by him. Justin--please stop!! We're all sick of you! Even Cameron Diaz is too.

the great dame was working; the great O'Toole was exhausted; and mel could have been hung over. Johnny is Johnny and i understand his reasons for staying away.
you know, we dont have to be nice all the time, but mean-spirited forums, racist remarks, and members who "hate" everyone and "hate" everything doesnt exactly inspire one to log in a whole lot....

Your nasty comments about Johnny Depp are really getting old. Did he stand you up for an interview, or something?

Of course O'Toole was exhausted, anyone could see that on his appearances in NYC. That's the problem when you have adrenalin amped 30 year old PR strategists trying to plan things for a 74 year old man. They try to cram in too much. They should've just flown O'Toole into LA, had him to the Leno show, a few cable interviews and print interviews and then just let him rest. In other words, the PR team blew it. They knew his history and they brushed it aside.

I'm glad he said bollocks on this... I'm exhausted and am going home. His appearance on The View was bizarre and needless.

If he gets the Oscar nod, they should fly him into LA. two weeks prior and let him rest.

I didn't really expect Mel to be there. He wasn't going to win so it would have been more awkward if he were there. Maybe next year.

Thank you guys for mentioning the reason for Dame Judi's absence....shame on you Tom O'neil for calling her an ingrate....I'd like to put something out there for discussion....Forrest Whitaker....yes, we all know how bad his speech was....but - and maybe this is just my cynical mind working overtime - but to me he came across as phony....like he was just going through the motions of how he thinks he should act upon receiving that award....to me it all just seemed really forced and over rehearsed....

Just so you know, Judi Dench was performing In Stratford performing in a musical production of Merry Wives. So, I wouldn't exactly call her an ingrate, she was just doing her job.

Judi Dench is performing in The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-on-Avon. This production has been scheduled for nearly a year's time. Mr. O'Neil, would you rather she disappoint thousands of ticketholders, many of whom travelled a great distance, just so she could fly to Hollywood for a weekend to appear at an awards show? Or is keeping her contract with RSC and the audience more important? Kudos to Dame Judi for being a true professional, and shame on Mr. O'Neil for suggesting otherwise. Who is the real ingrate?

"perhaps there is hope for Oscar's biggest loser yet."

Wow, that's not something I'd want written on my gravestone... though in reality, none of us have ever been nominated, so he's still ahead of us. :)

With regards to Dame Judi Dench and her no-show at this years Golden Globes: Ms. Dench is currently performing on the London Stage in "The Merry Wives Of Windsor", and it is due to this fact that she unfortunately could not make the awards ceremony.
