Video: Idi Amin was a 'charming' monster, Forest reminds us

January 25, 2007 | 11:42 am

Speaking of Forest Whitaker . . . he's still, officially, the frontrunner to keep winning every award, including SAG and the Oscar, so it's interesting to take note of his personal view of Idi Amin, the Ugandan dictator he portrays in "Last King of Scotland."

During a video interview I conducted with him at the Hollywood Museum, Whitaker reminds us of Amin's "charm, his wit, that charisma that helped him to get" to the top.

"There were a lot of monstrous things that he did," Whitaker admits, "but initially, in the beginning, he was trying to do something right. But he was ill-equipped, he was a soldier and (the presidency) was a position he really didn't want. When he starts to get isolated, the paranoia sets in."

Whitaker and I also discuss his general's costume, which will be on view to the public soon, along with costumes of nearly a dozen other Oscar, SAG and Globe-nominated films, including "Dreamgirls," "Babel," "The Queen," "Volver," "Little Children," "Letters from Iwo Jima" and "The Prestige." They'll be part of an exhibit, sponsored by The Envelope, that will open in a week or so at the Hollywood Museum in the Max Factor building at 1660 N. Highland, just south of Hollywood Boulevard and just steps from the Kodak Theatre where Oscar ceremonies are held. See the museum's website — CLICK HERE!
