BAFTAs no party

February 2, 2007 |  6:31 am

Pity the poor BAFTAs. First host Stephen Fry dropped out after six years of delighting audiences with his wit and charm. Now comes word that the lavish gala scheduled for the night before the Feb. 11 ceremony has been canceled following the withdrawal of main sponsor Burberrys. With the fashion company, famed for that ubiquitous checked design, facing protests over a decision to close one of its two British manufacturing plants, it did not want to give picketers such a high profile platform. But fear not partygoers, the post ceremony bash is still on.

Well, now there's one less chance for Helen Mirren to lose her Oscar the Russell Crowe way. (She opened the door by commenting on her BAFTA snub for "Elizabeth I" at the SAGs.) But with the awards show itself and the after-party, there's still a slim chance she could hand the little golden guy over to Meryl Streep on a silver platter.
