Hits of the Brits

Arctic_monkeys_1Indie rock ruled at the Brit Awards Wednesday night in London. Arctic Monkeys won best British group and album for their first record, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not", the fastest selling debut in UK chart history. Las Vegas based band The Killers won international group and album for "Sam's Town". While both groups earned multiple Grammy nominations, neither won any last Sunday losing to the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Gnarls Barkley.

As expected, James Morrison was named best Brit male artist for his soulful million selling album "Undiscovered" but soul singer Amy Winehouse triumphed over favored popstar Lily Allen to take home best Brit female artist. American Justin Timberlake and Canadian Nelly Furtado won best international artists. With the exception of best British single, decided by the public to be "Patience" from reunited boy band Take That, the awards, administered by the British Phonographic Industry Ltd., are determined by 1000 music professionals and media. The awardscast from Earl's Court, hosted by the irreverent Russell Brand, aired live on ITV for the first time since 1989 .
