Oscars choose (mostly) the Critics' Choice

I give the Broadcast Film Critics Association so much grief on this subject that I deserved the nudging phone message I got yesterday from John De Simio, one of its directors. BFCA likes to strut about what a great Oscars forecaster its Critics Choice Awards are, but then I quibble about this-that-this and its chiefs take it in good stride. Well, John phoned yesterday to call attention to the parallels this year, which, yes, are striking since BFCA was the only major award group to cite "The Departed" as best pic before the academy did.

Here's where they agreed:

Best Picture: "The Departed"
Best Director: Martin Scorsese, "The Departed"
Best Actor: Forest Whitaker, "The Last King of Scotland"
Best Actress: Helen Mirren, "The Queen"
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson, "Dreamgirls"
Best Writer: Michael Arndt, "Little Miss Sunshine"
Best Documentary: "An Inconvenient Truth"

Here's where they disagreed:

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
BFCA: Eddie Murphy, "Dreamgirls"
OSCARS: Alan Arkin, "Little Miss Sunshine"

BEST SONG
BFCA: "Listen," "Dremgirls"
OSCARS: "I Need to Wake Up," "An Inconvenient Truth"

BEST COMPOSER/ MUSICAL SCORE
BFCA: Philip Glass, "The Illusionist"
OSCARS: Gustavo Santaolalla, "Babel"

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
BFCA: "Cars"
OSCARS: "Happy Feet"

P.S. — We know that BFCA has class and taste because it nominated "Dreamgirls" for best pic! But, alas, that's another disconnect I keep tellin' ya guys about! . . . ;)

Actually, the Oscars are becoming more irrelevant as the alternative awards take over, but there's just TOO MUCH. That whole season which begins in November and ends in February/March is just overkill. And I'm still trying to understand what the darn awards do for someone's career, I mean - it's all about making money and making movies isn't it? It seems the actors that continue to work are not even Oscar-winners (i.e. Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, et al). In the final analysis, seems to be all about attending the awards shows, getting fed, getting swag,(even Lil Kim was at the pre-Oscar swag giveaway!) and being photographed. And it's great diversion from more important things in life.
