Boos & Cheers for Emmy noms from Nelson Branco

March 14, 2007 |  5:10 pm

Here's thorough analysis of the Daytime Emmy noms from our ole chum Nelson Branco, veteran daytime TV journo who contributes to In Touch Weekly, TV Guide Canada and Hello! Canada. When I asked for his views, he was quite generous with his response. Words below are Nelson's:

GhpullquoteOUTSTANDING DAYTIME DRAMA SERIES

GLARING OMISSIONS: 'General Hospital,' 'As The World Turns'

REAX: Thrilled for 'B&B' and 'OLTL' especially; not that disappointed over the biggest betrayal ever by not giving 'GH' its due. Ironically, it did deserve to be nominated this year (despite other years when it won the statue). It's clear the industry is sick of the cheap ploys the producers use to snag the top prize. 'B&B,' which is celebrating 20 years later this month, deserves the award for making daytime delicious again with its unparalleled acting, brilliant writing, and amazing production qualities all without having to rely on the magic of a tsunami or a train wreck. At the end of the day, despite Lang's snub, it's sadder that Bradley Bell doesn't have an Emmy for Best Show or Writing, so let's work on his Emmy success first, then Lang's later.

OUTSTANDING TALK SHOW

GLARING OMISSIONS: None.

REAX: 'The View' should win this hands down. 'LIVE! With Regis and Kelly' was smart for taking themselves out of this category. In fact, we agree — they are really more of a local early morning show than big mid-day chat fests, which tackle more serious fare.

OUTSTANDING TALK SHOW HOST

GLARING OMISSION: None

REAX: It's shocking that three worst hosts in daytime history earned top spots here: Ray, Banks, and McGraw are loud, obnoxious, and way out of their league. Regardless, it's Ellen vs. Rosie. Let the best lesbian win. And ABC is clearly on damage control as it wisely but sadly for us took Star Jones and Meredith Vieira out of the running. Bast**ds! Someone should invite Jones regardless to the event; I'll be her date! Again, Philbin and Ripa had no chance in hell and were wise to get out of this big category and settle for Best Morning Show Host (wonder who their competition is?). Regardless, it’s a great move because, at the end of the day, it’s the number of Emmys on your mantle NOT what they are for.

Nelsonpullquote_1OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS

GLARING OMISSIONS: 'B&B’s' Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke) and Susan Flannery (Stephanie).

REAX: I was right that there would be double showings from a couple shows here, specifically 'GL' and 'Y&R.' Nice to see Jeanne Cooper, who still hasn't won a freakin' Emmy even though she's been in daytime for a 100 years show; I'm rooting for her all the way, with West as a second choice. No Katherine Kelly Lang or Susan Flannery. I'm on the phone waiting to book an appointment with my therapist right now. This system sucks, period! KKL, we love you and you simply deserve better.

Coming soon to a press release near you. Kim Zimmer pleas, "I will swear on my career that if I win once again, I will promise to pull myself out of the race next year. Honest."

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR

GLARING OMISSIONS: Jack Wagner (Nick, 'B&B'); Trevor St. John (Todd, 'OLTL')

REAX: Only Park and Goldin have yet to win a statue. This is still an old boys' club, like it or not. Honestly, I could care less who wins here unless it's Tony Geary, who should be the top Emmy holder by now. Wagner deserved to win the award, and, since he's not nominated, I'm boycotting this category!

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS

GLARING OMISSIONS: Tracey Bregman (Lauren, 'Y&R'); Hunter Tylo (Taylor, 'B&B')

REAX: Thrilled for everyone here except Goldsberry and Tom (it's clear her 'Y&R' pals voted for her as well as 'OLTL'). I'm rooting for a tie between the magical Kay and often-overlooked Francis. One trend this year is definitely honoring those actors who were unfairly fired. Many former soap stars managed to snag nominations this year as retribution and I'm happy to see them place.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR

GLARING OMISSIONS: Jason Thompson (Patrick 'GH'); Tuc Watkins (David, 'OLTL')

REAX: Yawn. Perhaps 'OLTL' will re-hire the very popular Gauthier back and rectify their mistake?

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTRESS

GLARING OMISSIONS: Kristen Alderson (Starr, 'OLTL'); Kristen Storms (Maxie, 'GH')

REAX: Zzzzzzzzz. It would be fantastic and historic to watch Berman win, along with her on-screen parents, Geary and Francis.

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTOR

GLARING OMISSIONS: Scott Clifton (Dillon, 'GH'); Blake B. Berris (Nick, 'Days')

REAX: Pelphrey should nab his second Emmy, but watch out for Hansis' coming-out reels. Other big news is the fact that 'Passions' earned a rare acting nomination here for promising newcomer Stevenson, but his material stinks although he's a great actor.

John-Paul Lavoisies should be nominated.

My thoughts:

- I'm just glad that the horrendous AMC got few nods (great actors, but the show has been lousy for a while).
- I am shocked that Flannery didn't get a nod, especially after her character-defining scenes with Ann and Pamela. As for Lang - I think she's an able, likable actress, but I've never seen her as Emmy material. She has a knack for keeping Brooke likeable, but whether it's her performance, or the fact that B&B keeps running Brooke in the same circles, you never see a lot of range there.
- Stafford is a whiz and a pro....not sure what the poster upthread is on!

Peter Bergman & Jeanne Cooper should never have been put on the preliminary ballot let alone been nominated. Victoria Rowell and Eric Braeden should have been on the ballot and nominated for carrying that show this past year! Trevor St. John and Steve Burton were robbed beyond belief!

trevor st. john what does a guy have to do ,come back from the dead?

I don't think Rebecca Herbst should be up there, not at all!!

And NLG was robbed.

I wanted one for Jason Thompson but he is new and will have his time hopefully.

I can't believe that Nancy Lee Grahn didn't get a nomination. She had an outstanding year dealing with the discovery that Sam McCall is her long lost daughter and her battle with lung cancer! What's up with that?

People are making a big deal about Susan Flannery not being nominated but she has been nominated many times and has one many times. Since Nancy Lee Grahn is out of the running, I put my money on Kim Zimmer for Guiding Light.

In Lead Actor: he forgot to mention Micheal E. Knight as a GLARRING omission and since he is so devoted to GH you would think he'd mention the fact that Nancy Grahn was snubbed.

Also what's with the hate for Heather Tom and Renee Goldsberry, two of the finest actresses ever to grace daytime tv?

I don't understand why Nelson Branco is so devoted to B&B (and then takes a moment to diss the fine work of supporting-actress nominees Renee Goldsberry and Heather Tom). B&B was a snooze in 2006, recycling storylines and with few exceptions giving its cast nothing of interest to do, and most B&B fans I know share that assessment. Jack Wagner was the best actor of the year? Did Branco happen to miss the work of Y&R's Peter Bergman and GH's Anthony Geary last year?

Worst, he disses the voting system for disadvantaging Susan Flannery and Katherine Kelly Lang, which doesn't make a lot of sense. Flannery has won multiple Emmys under this system, and Lang did just as poorly before the system was implemented. Yet he praises the nomination for Jeanne Cooper, who was hardly on Y&R at all in 2006 and took a nomination from women who actually were leading actresses.

I disappointed that AMC's Cady McClain, Jacob Young, and Michael E. Knight were NOT NOMINATED!

I'm super excited about Rebecca Herbst getting a nomination. I think she is usually so under rated. It's good to see her being recognized.

I would love this to be a night for the "Spencers" and see Tony Geary, Genie Francis and Julie Berman all take it home!

MS STAFFORD SHOULD NOT EVEN BE IN SHOW BUSINESS LET ALONE BE NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTRESS, UNLESS IT WAS FOR PHONY ACTRESS OF THE YEAR!
