Oscars 2008: Streep vs. Kidman?
It's starting to look like we can probably pencil in a couple of Oscar nominees for next year with the announcement that Meryl Streep is to take on the role of the avenging Mother Superior in the film version of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and Tony award winning play "Doubt" opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman as the priest she suspects of child abuse. (CLICK HERE for a list of previous clerical contenders.) The role of the young nun caught in the middle of their cat-and-mouse game is still uncast, but will be a plum part for the actress lucky enough to land it. The only possible hiccup could be that John Patrick Shanley, Oscar winner for the screenplay of "Moonstruck," who is adapting his play, is also directing. His only other film - "Joe Versus the Volcano," a rare misstep for Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan back in 1990.
Of course, there is the usual grumbling along the Rialto that Cherry Jones, Tony winner as the original Sister Aloysius, was passed over for the part, as was Brian F. O'Byrne who played the priest, but as they say in Hollywood, "that's showbiz." Just ask Cynthia Nixon who picked up a Tony last year as the grief-stricken mother in "Rabbit Hole." While she was delighted that her pal David Lindsay-Abaire won the Pulitzer for that play on Monday, how happy can she be that Nicole Kidman, Streep's Oscar winning co-star from "The Hours," gets to be in the movie version which is to begin filming later this year? (CLICK HERE to cotinue reading!)
Photos, from top: Cherry Jones leaves no "Doubt" as to who is in charge while Cynthia Nixon wants to hide down a "Rabbit Hole." (MTC)
With good roles for actresses few and far between, playing a nun may be a sure-fire way to get an Oscar nod.
Jennifer Jones - "The Song of Bernadette" (winner)
Gladys Cooper - "The Song of Bernadette"
Ingrid Bergman - "The Bells of St. Mary's"
Loretta Young - "Come to the Stable"
Celeste Holm - "Come to the Stable"
Audrey Hepburn - "A Nun's Story"
Lilia Skala - "Lilies of the Field"
Julie Andrews - "The Sound of Music"
Peggy Wood - "The Sound of Music"
Anne Bancroft - "Agnes of God"
Meg Tilly - "Agnes of God"
Susan Sarandon - "Dead Man Walking" (winner)
And playing a priest is also an attention getter.
Spencer Tracy - "Boys Town" (winner)
Bing Crosby - "Going My Way" (winner)
Barry Fitzgerald - "Going My Way" (winner)
Richard Burton - "Becket"
Jason Miller - "The Exorcist"

Meryl Streep is an actress whose description goes beyond words and while I think Kidman is a bit overrated, she has the potential to deliver excellent performances. Unfortunately, the role in "Doubt" especially, these roles belong to the original people who portrayed them. Whatever happened to the time when actors and actresses won Oscars for portraying the roles they originally portrayed on Broadway? Joel Gray, Claudette Colbert, Yul Brenner. Any others? Star power does not necessarily equal fine art and since these productions sound like art house ones, they should concentrate on fine art rather than money. But, then again, I'm only a fan. What the hell do I know?

I was about to say "What? No Meryl Streep for Lions for Lambs or w/e it is called. No Cate Blanchett for the Golden Age" but then I realized that it is for the oscars after the next oscars.

Well if it does come down to these two (which I expect it won't) I think Streep will get it over kidman who could get a dual nomination maybe? (Golden Compass)
