Hey, let's bestow an Emmy for best campaign box! FX wins!
So far this year my award for Best Emmy Campaign Box goes to FX network.
All of the networks' boxes are pretty much the same — they're simple, unadorned, practical and efficient. They forego big crazy gimmicks that have been used — sometimes foolishly — to get attention in the past. They're made to nestle near a voters' TV set so the DVDs are easily within reach when the voter has time to check 'em out.
But so far only FX has done a good job trumpeting the contents on the cover of a big network box. That's a key element necessary to entice potential voters to watch the DVDs.
Lifetime does a nice job putting all three of its TV films on the cover, but the box only contains telefilms. It's not a full network box. Of those, HBO's is adorned with photos of its contents, yes, but the pix are tiny. Showtime opted for oval elegance. Its round box is so lovely that the network hopes its appearance is enough to draw voters to open it. And perhaps they will, but it's risky: no photos at all.
However, FX's box boasts fetching cover photos of its Emmy contenders (Denis Leary in flames! Call the Fire Department! . . . Oh, never mind).
These are the episodes contained on the DVDs of seven series:
"Rescue Me" ("Discovery," "Twilight," "Hell")
"The Riches" ("Pilot," "Believe the Lie," "Reckless Gardening")
"The Shield" ("On the Jones," "Baptism By Fire," "Chasing Ghosts")
"30 Days" ("Immigration," "Outsourcing," "Jail")
"Nip/Tuck" ("Cindy Plumb," "Merrill Bobolit," "Reefer")
"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" ("Mac Bangs Dennis' Mom," "Hundred Dollar Baby," "Dennis and Dee Get a New Dad")
"Dirt" ("Come Together," "Caught on Tape," "Ita Missa Est")
Also inside are 50 pages of info and pix of each show and individual contenders. Curious: "The Shield" supporting stars CCH Pounder and Walton Goggins get a whole page just like lead star Michael Chiklis. That's how confident network exex are about their chances over other supporting stars Benito Martinez, David Rees Snell and Catherine Dent, whose photos share one page with three other supporting costars.
Lots of ra-ra quotes reveal what top media think of these shows. TV Guide calls "The Shield" "some of the best TV you'll see all year." USA Today calls "Rescue Me" "one of television's best series."
