New York in, New Yorker out at Ellies
While television honors its best with the Emmys, the world of magazines celebrates with the Ellies. At the 42nd annual awardfest in Gotham on Tuesday, New York magazine was the big winner, taking home 5 of its 7 nominations including general excellence in its circulation category. While the awards for general excellence are broken up by readership, with winners ranging from National Geographic at the 2 million plus level to Bulletin of Atomic Scientists which, not surprisingly, reaches fewer than 100,000, other categories cross over all levels of circulation. O, The Oprah Magazine, won its first Ellie for a piece on reading while the increasingly political Vanity Fair took two prizes for public interest and commentary writing. The New Yorker, which has won a record 42 Ellies, went 0 for 9, the first time since 1999 that it has failed to win at least one award.
