'Spring Awakening' & 'Utopia' sweep Outer Critics' Awards
"Spring Awakening" and "Coast of Utopia" continued their recent romp through the theater kudos derby, now snatching up top honors from the Outer Critics after previous sweeps of the New York Drama Critics Circle and Drama League Awards.
"Spring" sprung four new wins: best new Broadway musical, director (Michael Mayer) and new music score.
"Utopia" reaped six: best new Broadway play, director (Jack O'Brien), featured actress (Martha Plimpton), lighting, set design and costumes.
Other multiple winners include the productions of Company, In the Heights, Journey's End, LoveMusik and No Child, which all won two prizes apiece.
The Outer Critics Circle Awards will be presented at a May 24 ceremony to be held at Sardi's Restaurant. The awards are decided upon by a group of writers "covering New York theatre for out-of town newspapers, national publications and other media beyond Broadway."
