Our chat with Hugh Laurie is canceled; Mary-Louise Parker still on
I have canceled our planned chat session with Hugh Laurie. We just couldn't make it work — sorry. He told us a few times that he wanted to do it, but while we coped with chaos that resulted from being hit by a swarm of his crazed fans who found out about the pending visit, too much time passed. We couldn't get it organized. This Thursday Hugh's departing L.A. for London, so let's bid him a fond farewell, thank him for thinking of us and wish him best on July 19 when Emmy noms are announced.
I have re-opened the registration function in our forums. New members are now welcome to join us in the message boards to discuss showbiz awards sensibly.
And, if they behave, to join us this Saturday, June 30, at 3 p.m. ET/ noon PT to dish Emmys with "Weeds" star Mary-Louise Parker.
We'll meet in our chat room - CLICK HERE! Here's the link to our main forum: CLICK HERE!

Well...no wonder it was cancelled. I am a fan of Mr. Laurie's too. I remember hearing about the Red Cross event. It was held in a suburb of Los Angeles. Excuse me but, any group of people who fly in all the way from "...all over California...Colorado...and FLORIDA...." (!!!) and who pay for "not cheap" tickets, (I hear they were over $150.00 each!), just to see an actor sit at a table and eat his dinner at a charity event...well...who would want to facilitate communication between Mr. Laurie and a bunch of idiots like that. You're just supposed to enjoy the man's WORK, folks! Grow up!

The deal here is that the flood of fans made the organisation of an internet chat too difficult and hard to operate; nothing substantial can come from a webchat wherein a million people are trying to ask one person a question all at the same time, and when people flood, it looks crazed. I thought the adjective was spot on and your comment overly defensive - not everyone's a lunatic, true, but not everyone's an "educated" fan when given the opportunity to brush with fame.

I find your distate over the "crazed fans" to be somewhat disengenous. Do you think any of us would care one bit about your column or your opinions if we weren't a "crazed fan?" I went to a Red Cross Event where I helped to assemble a table of the same fans you mock. The charity fundraiser was not cheap. We had two lawyers, two doctors, two linguists who teach at L.A. colleges, a manager , a grandmother and a former executive secretary at our table. They flew in from Florida, Colorado and all over California to just see Hugh Laurie in person. Why would educated people do this? Because Hugh Laurie is a phenomenal actor and has brought to life a very complicated character that we all love and hate. Believe it or not, these crazed fans neither hassled him nor threatened to tear his clothes off (although if he had offered, we wouldn't have stopped him.) Crazed fans make up your business. Deal with it.
