Pssst! . . . More tattle re what'll be on Tonys telecast
"I'm going to open the Tonys Awards show!" Angela Lansbury told me yesterday when I dropped by her apartment in Manhattan to conduct a video interview you'll soon see here. She wasn't sure if she was tattling something she should keep hush, so she kind of whispered it in a conspiratorial tone, then winked. But that's all she'd say. Except that the opening number has something to do with the Rockettes joining her at Radio City Music Hall.
Producers have announced other performers, "American Idol" champ Fantasia Barrino. But what will she do? Her show, "The Color Purple," was nominated last year, not now.
There will be numbers from the four nominees for best musical and the three currently running nominees for best revival of a musical: "Curtains," "Grey Gardens," "Mary Poppins," "Spring Awakening," "A Chorus Line," "Company," and "110 in the Shade." The fourth best revival nominee, "The Apple Tree," will not perform on the telecast, nor will the shows not nominated for best musical. Frankly, it outrageous unfair to exclude "Apple Tree," but the snub is a matter of economics. It's up to a show's producers to stage their musical number and to absorb the cost (upwards of $100,000), so there's no incentive to do so if the show is off the boards.
Tonycast producers aim to crank up the show's entertainment and starpower as much as possible to compete against that other Tony on the last night of "The Sopranos: EVER! (Oh, nooooo!)
The show will have no host. The evening's presenters will include Harry Connick, Jr., Kevin Spacey, Usher, Vanessa Williams, Claire Danes, Jeff Daniels, Brian Dennehy, Carla Gugino, Neil Patrick Harris, Anne Heche, Marg Helgenberger, Judd Hirsch, Felicity Huffman, Melina Kanakaredes, Eddie Izzard, Jane Krakowski, Angela Lansbury, Robert Sean Leonard, Audra McDonald, Cynthia Nixon, Bernadette Peters, William Petersen, David Hyde Pierce, Liev Schreiber, John Turturro, Sam Waterston, Rainn Wilson, Patrick Wilson, and the leads of Jersey Boys: Christian Hoff, Daniel Reichard, J. Robert Spencer, and John Lloyd Young.

Hooray!! I am THRILLED that Angela Lansbury is taking such an active part in this year's Tony Awards. She is a great lady and she has an equally great impact on stage. Having her open the show is a sign, justly given, that the 4 time Tony Award winning actress is held with such high regard.

If you really think about it...it's a pretty stupid move on the Tony people's part. So what if the Tonys are up against the Sopranos' seasonal finale (and final show)...If viewers miss the Sopranos, they eventually will get a chance to see it again via reruns or that wonderful archive saver the DVD!...duh!? Whereas, not including such shows as Legally Blonde and LoveMusik in the Tony telecast is a dumb move, you deprive the TV viewers the chance to see the appeal these two particular shows have...they will be deprived of any exposure....plus the only way an average TV viewer/theater lover can watch these shows is either travel to NY and actually see it live on stage or wait for PBS (if ever) to broadcast it....or wait for Broadway Lost Treasures IV or V....go figure...
