Pundits' scorecard: Breakdown of Tonys predix
There's consensus among most Tonys gurus about the top races. Virtually all are picking "Spring Awakening" to win best musical, for example. But there's much mayhem over the race for best lead actress in a play where there's also much on the line: If Angela Lansbury wins again, she'll tie Julie Harris as the biggest winner in the Tony Awards' history.
More predix are coming soon. Meantime, here's the input of Melissa Bernardo (Entertainment Weekly), Martin Denton (NYTheatre.com), Joe Dziemianowicz (NY Daily News), Andrew Gans (Playbill), Elysa Gardner (USA Today), Susan Haskins (Theater Talk), Andy Humm (Gay U.S.A.), Charles McNulty (L.A. Times), Tom O'Neil (TheEnvelope.com), Patrick Pacheco (L.A. Times), Paul Sheehan (TheEnvelope.com), David Sheward (Back Stage), Linda Winer (Newsday)

iN 1956, MY CLIENTS AL STEELE AND JOAN CRAWFORD STEELE OF THE PEPSI COLA CO. SPONSORED THE TONYS ON CH. 5. WE HAD THREE STATIONARY B&W CAMERAS IN THE BALLROOM AT THE PLAZA HOTEL. SHOW WENT OK, BUT JOAN FELL ASLEEP AT TABLE#`1. IN 1957, WE BOUGHT SHOW AGAIN AND MOVED IT TO WCBS CH 2. AT 2:30/3 PM THAT SUNDAY, THE CBS TECHNICAL UNION [IBEW?] DEMANDED TRIPLE TIME OVERTIME STARTING AT 6 PM. DR. FRANK STANTON AND HUBBELL ROBINSON OF CBS WOULDN'T FOLD AND WE NEVER GOT ON THE AIR. AND I HAD FILMED A GREAT TWO MINUTE OPENING -- A MONTAGE OF ALL THE B'WAY THEATRE MARQUEES WHICH HAD GOT A RAVE IN VARIETY THE YEAR BEFORE. GOOD LUCK TOMORROW NIGHT,

I'd love to see Audra win her fifth (after catching 110 in the Shade last week, I firmly believe it's the strongest performance of the year), but I don't think it will happen. It's a pity 110 will likely be shut out this year -- it's a first-rate production of a second-rate musical. But THANK GOD Raul Esparza, arguably the most talented leading man on Broadway, will finally be recognized.

Oh, Audra McDonald will win that fifth Tony. Just not this year! :) This one belongs to Ebersole.

Christine Ebersole? Sorry, looks like Audra McDonald is bringing home a historical FIFTH Tony!
I do hope that La Redgrave will prevail. Kudos to Duncan Sheik and the SPRING AWAKENING team.
