Transcript: Our Emmy chat with Powers Boothe

June 13, 2007 |  5:02 am

PowersboothpullquotePowers Boothe had a few shockeroos for us when he chatted live with our forum posters on Thursday. Turns out he did not submit himself for Emmy consideration for "Deadwood." Just "24." And: "No, I hadn't heard the rumor of my death" as U.S. Vice President Noah Daniels on "24," he added. "I hope Daniels is safe. We have more world saving tasks to perform." What does he think of the hubbub he caused back in 1980 when he defied an actors' boycott of the Primetime Emmys and showed up to accept the prize for best lead actor in a TV film for "Guyana Tragedy: The Life of Rev. Jim Jones"? In his acceptance speech, he said, "This is either the most courageous thing I've ever done — or the stupidest." Now he reveals to us: "I don't think it hurt my career. Award shows are meant to be a celebration of our craft not political."

Aura: hi Mr. Boothe
Guru: Hi Powers
Boomer: Hello, Mr. Boothe. Welcome aboard!!
Tom O'Neil: Hi Powers! Welcome!
Tom O'Neil: Powers -- are y ou able to type OK?
Tom O'Neil: We have sooo many questions for you
Powers Boothe: Yes
Tom O'Neil: Let's start with : what episode submission are you entering in Emmy competition?
Powers Boothe: I don't remember, maybe it was like 14

Tom O'Neil: Which episode of '24' will you give the judges if you make the next cut-off in voting
Boomer: Yes, what is your episode for 24 and your episode for Deadwood.
Tom O'Neil: Do you remember the story line? If not the title
Powers Boothe: Probably a later one, somewhere 16 to 18. I'm sure it had to do with the 25th Amendment
BTN: i think the best scene was when you put your resignation in your pocket while the Pres collapsed
Tom O'Neil: Were you suprirsed last year when '24' pulled off the big win for best drama series?
Powers Boothe: No episode for Deadwood, I am only submitted for "24"
Tom O'Neil: Wow!
Boomer: Were you a fan of 24 before you joined the show?
BTN: How were you hired for 24
mia: I think it's 6x16, it's shortly after Karen Hayes returns..
Powers Boothe: Yeah, the resignation sequence was great and it was a great plot twist
BTN: loved that scene!
Tom O'Neil: It's rare that TV shows or films of the "thriller" genre do well at the Emmys or Oscars, so the big sweep that '24' pulled off last year was amazing on so many levels
Powers Boothe: I was a fan of "24" but not as active as when I was cast. Joel Surnow wanted me to do a different role before the season started but we mutually agreed that it wasn't the right one for me and then later on they wrote V.P. Daniels for me.
Boomer: Have you had any discussions yet about returning for the 7th season?
BTN: can you which role?
Tom O'Neil: Also, it had been an Emmy player for years, but didn't win big, then, all of a sudden, yeowsa
BTN: can you say which role
mia: They really needed a character like Noah Daniels after reintroducing Wayne as President. Honestly.
JRTS5: Yes, Wayne's character was ruined this season
JRTS5: Used to be sneaky and tough but he turned into a bit of a wimp. Got annoying
Powers Boothe: Well it was about time "24" won because it is a ground breakaing show in so many ways. The 24 hour time line is incredible for suspense and drama plus Keifer's work has been outstanding from the beginning as well as the writing and cinematography
2007-06-14 16:14:08.0
Boomer: Were you disappointed that you and Kiefer had no scenes together in person?
Powers Boothe: Yes, we have discussions about next season but they have not fully decided on the format the show will take. I hope to be back, if not I wish them well, it was a great experience for me
BTN: Did you hear the rumor that Bauer was going to kill Daniels?
JRTS5: Bauer didn't have the guts to kill Logan, I bet Daniels is safe
Powers Boothe: Yes, I was disappointed that I didn't have scenes with Keifer. I have admired his work for years. It would have been fun. No haven't heard the rumor about my death! I hope Daniels is safe. We have more world saving tasks to perform
Boomer: On the other hand, you had some amazing scenes with Jayne Atkinson and Peter MacNicol. What was it like working with those 2?
Powers Boothe: I have known Peter for 30 years and it was a great pleasure to work with him. He was always there in the moment and I felt our scenes played very well. He is a great guy. It was interesting to have the kind of male/female rivalry with Jayne, also a great actress, I particularly liked out last scene together in the final episode where I told her that all the blood would be on her hands.
JRTS5: That scene was chilling.
Powers Boothe: Thank you
smedleyp: As an actor, is there a difference in working on a show like Deadwood where the language is so structured and precise and 24 - which is very spare yet seems to allow a lot of freedom almost like a jazz piece.
BTN: I thought the last episodes were very good-the acting especially
2007-06-14 16:19:06.0
Boomer: Speaking of blood, I also wanted to ask about Deadwood. Do you really feel like HBO will be able to pull the whole cast together for the rumored 2 tv movies?
2007-06-14 16:19:09.0
mia: Early in the season some people wondered if Hayes and Daniels had a romantic history... (I think it was the way you said "I've known Karen hayes for many years" and that smirk on your face!) Anyway, I was wondering if you and Jayne Atkinson discussed their personal/professional background?
Powers Boothe: Yes, Deadwood was like doing Shakespeare. One word out of place destroyed the whole line and the scene in general
BTN: I just wanted to say that I admired your work in A Family of Spies
Powers Boothe: It was like doing Mozart. On "24" the dialogue is more precise than you think and in playing the President, I felt an obligation to uphold the dignity of the office at all costs. Therefore, I didn't ablib or change much of the dialogue
Powers Boothe: Thanks. I seem to play memorable bad guys!
Aura: Like Curly Bill. I love him. Love Tombstone. How was working on that film?
Boomer: You sure do! And the first time I remember seeing your work was as Jim Jones, an incredible tv movie!
BTN: Definitely!
Tom O'Neil: speaking of the Jim Jones TV movie!
Powers Boothe: Jayne and I discussed the history of our characters somewhat. I had to often remind her that whether or not either of us liked it, Daniels was the president and his word was final
Tom O'Neil: Powers - when you attended the Emmys in 1980 and accepted the award for "Guyana" you said that it was either the most courageous moment of your life or the stupidest
Tom O'Neil: Of course the strike was going on then
BTN: A lot of the audience was always routing for Karen to win those debates
Powers Boothe: Tombstone was the joy of my life. I grew up on a farm in Texas and they paid me to play a cowboy. What fun! The cast and script were incredible. Of all the films I have done the audience seems to love that one most.
Tom O'Neil: What's the upshot? Looking back at the 1980 Emmys, what do you think today? Obviously, it didn't hurt your career. Or did it? You continued to work steadily
Powers Boothe: The Emmy in 1980 was a long time ago. I was and am very proud of that work. it was not my intention to make any kind of political statement or upset anyone. It was not a strike action.
Powers Boothe: Thank god they were routing for Karyn otherwise there would have been no tension or plot
BTN: yeah of course
Tom O'Neil: yes, and you were very smart to say that you were supportive of your fellow actors when you attended the Emmys in 1980
Tom O'Neil: You handled it all quite diplomatically
Tom O'Neil: but it was considered so risky
Boomer: What did your fellow actors have to say to you in the weeks and months following the 1980 Emmys?
Tom O'Neil: good question, Boomer
Powers Boothe: I don't think it hurt my career. Award shows are meant to be a celebration of our craft not political. I have had the great fortune of working with some of the best actors and directors in the world and I hope it continues
mia: (I'm personally hoping they return as President and VP, though..)
smedleyp: I loved the introduction of you as Daniels in that, initially you were all of Tom Lennox's policy opinions come to life in the position to make them come a reality. But, then it got complicated...........
Powers Boothe: Most actors were supportive. It never crossed my mind that it was risky.
BTN: I just looked and you beat three legends! Jason Robards, Henry Fonda and Tony Curtis!
Tom O'Neil: Well, it all worked out in the end. Another Hollywood happy ending. Good for you
JOSE: buenas noches
Boomer: I also wanted to ask about Deadwood. Do you really feel like HBO will be able to pull the whole cast together for the rumored 2 tv movies?
JRTS5: buenas noches
Powers Boothe: Yeah, it got complicated but then what on "24" has not been complicated?
BTN: ha ha
JOSE: Mr Boothe, first of all hellos from europe, it is a big honor chat to you.
Powers Boothe: I don't know if we will do Deadwood again, I hope so. The audience deserves it. I think it is always risky to, not only take your audiences candy away but unforgiveable to make false promises.
Powers Boothe: Thank you Jose
BTN: Deadwood fans should pull a Jericho and send some western theme stuff to HBO
JOSE: on my birthday... anyway, i always want to ask you the only time you wer nominated for the emmy, did you really though you were going to win?
Tom O'Neil: you just missed our discussion of that, Jose
Powers Boothe: Deadwood fans sent over 500,000 e-mails to HBO in protest, maybe they will all cancel their subscription if it doesn't come back!
Aura: Another movie of yours that we love is Sin City. You're going to be involved with the sequel, right? Or is it on hold because R. Rodriguez is doing Barbarella?
Tom O'Neil: If anyone still has HBO then -- the Sopranos uproar is STILL going on!
BTN: I would like to see more Deadwood
Powers Boothe: Don't know about Sin City. It was great fun and made a lot of money. Hope to do a sequel. Loved Robert and Frank Marshall.
BTN: what do you think of big cliffhangers like the one Sopranos did
Powers Boothe: Whats up with the Sopranos ending?
BTN: or just open ended endings
Powers Boothe: I would like to see more Deadwood too
Boomer: There has never ever been a show like Deadwood before. I hope it finds some way to return. How did you enjoy working with Ian McShane and Gerald McRaney. Somehow, they were even more evil than you were!:)
Tom O'Neil: Powers, what do you think of Milch's new "John from Cincinnati"??? Sure is WEIRD, eh?
JOSE: sorry Tom, i was celebrating my birthday... it is 1.32 am here in Ausria...
Powers Boothe: Well Sopranos is either over or its not. I think thats the publics disatisfaction.
Powers Boothe: Loved McRaney, we went hunting together. Ian and I didn't work much together but he was great.
Powers Boothe: I love it when someone is more evil than me!
Tom O'Neil: IS THAT POSSIBLE???
Powers Boothe: Milch is Milch! his mind is far beyond mine. Give the show a chance.
BTN: McRaney was great on Deadwood and Jericho
Powers Boothe: McRaney has been a good actor for a long time.
Boomer: What sorts of shows do you enjoy on TV? Are you an Emmy voter, too, as well as a winner?
Powers Boothe: Jose, I love Vienna
Powers Boothe: I am not an Emmy voter. I love movies, sports and news
BTN: so what's the favorite recent movie?
BTN: your favorite
BTN: you were great in Nixon
BTN: very convincine as Haig
Tom O'Neil: very creepy=convincing as Haig
BTN: agree
Powers Boothe: I have an independent movie called The Final Season with Sean Astin that we hope to get a release for this year. Its about baseball and Americana and quite wonderful. I loved Nixon. Oliver STone is one of my favorite directors to have worked with and Tony Hopkins is needless to say, extraordinary
Powers Boothe: I got to talk to Haig for 2 hours. Amazing man.
Boomer: You play such creepy and/or evil characters almost all of the time. Do you ever wish a director would give you a shot with a comedy?
Tom O'Neil: Why did you decide not to submit for "Deadwood"? Was it because you thought it smart to focus your Emmy shot and that '24' has the better shot?
JRTS5: With Sean Astin? What is it with 24 actors ending up working together in other projects all the time? lol
Powers Boothe: Would love to do comedy. Have done as many heroes as villains, its just the baddies are more memorable.
Rob L: So sorry I'm late! Trains in Sydney all broken down this morning!!! Hi Mr Boothe - long time fan!
Powers Boothe: You can't be submitted for 2 shows. 24 is current and Fox is very supportive. Its nice to have ones work appreciated in any form and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of two of the best shows on tv
Powers Boothe: Don't know. Several actors on The Final Season were in 24
Powers Boothe: Hi Rob L.
Boomer: What was it like working with your daughter on Deadwood?
Powers Boothe: Jose, Best supporting actor in a Drama Series. Someone thought I was good!
BTN: 24 SHOULD be up for the SAG award for best ensemble.. do you ever think the Emmys should have ensemble categories
Powers Boothe: Loved working with my daughter. Was odd being her pimp! HA She did a great job and I loved watching her grow as an actress.
JOSE: i feel bad cause you and Mr. McNicol were great together.
Boomer: Yes, many of us thought you would submit as guest actor for 24 and supporting actor for Deadwood (based on the credit billings).
Powers Boothe: 24 and Deadwood were up for SAG ensemble awards. Yes, Emmy
Powers Boothe: s should have ensemble awards
Tom O'Neil: He was just nommed at SAG in the ensemble race for Deadwood
Powers Boothe: Billing is billing. Its confusing.
BTN: I think so-so many shows now have very big ensembles and not all of them can get in individually
JOSE: but they way, have you ever to record a disco (i mean like for children and so on) cause you have a extraordinary voice, and who knows could be a grammy-winner in the future
BTN: Great news about SAG nom for Deadwood-forgot
Rob L: Powers, apologies if this has already been addressed, but I would love to know what has been your career highlight to date (there's many to choose from)
Powers Boothe: Hope the highlight is yet to come
BTN: Have you ever recorded a book on tape? or been approached to
JOSE: People like Helen Hayes, Peter Ustinov, Kate Winslet they have an grammy
Rob L: Thanks for that. And can you tell us which Deadwood cast members you still in contact with - who was exceptionally great to work with from Deadwood?
Boomer: You have done a lot of voiceover work. How is that different for an actor than being seen?
Powers Boothe: I have done books on tape, movies on tape, voice overs commercially and am about to do a character in an animated film. it is fun
BTN: i have to go to amazon and look for some of those books
Powers Boothe: Voiceover work is different, hard to explain but you still play the scene and play the character. The audience supplies the visuals sometimes.
Powers Boothe: Brad Dourif, Dayton Calley. I was in Jim Jones with Brad. There were so many great actors on Deadwood. It was always a joy and a challenge.
Aura: You've done voiceover work on the Justice League, right? But you actually look like a superhero. Have you ever played one, or would you want to?
JRTS5: Interesting question
Boomer: You would be a great addition to "Heroes" this coming season (new hero or new villain). Call your agent!!
Tom O'Neil: You've given us LOTS of time, Powers. Whenver you want to wrap up here, just be assertive and let us know that you gotta dash. Otherwise, just hang on and keep chatting with us
Powers Boothe: Justice League was fun. When I played the Gorilla, my son thought I had finally made it! Superheroes, sure!
BTN: yeah Heroes-good move
Aura: No I'd rather see him on LOST. Be on LOST. :)
Powers Boothe: Heroes is opposite 24 so I haven't watched it!
Powers Boothe: But Lost is ending
Boomer: Sorry, I wasn't thinking about that. Be on both and double your voters.
Aura: in 2010 there's time
Boomer: Meant to say double your viewers!
BTN: Lost is over 2010 there's still time
Powers Boothe: Thanks to all of you. It has been my pleasure to answer your questions and talk and as Curly Bill would say "Well, Bye"...
BTN: bye! great chat
JOSE: thank you very much
Tom O'Neil: THANKS, POWERS!!!!!!!
JOSE: it was very nice.
Aura: thanks, Mr. Boothe
Boomer: Thank you so much for joining us tonight! Good luck with the Emmy voting.
Tom O'Neil: Good luck getting ANOTHER Emmy
JRTS5: thank you Powers, goodbye!
BTN: thanks and good luck
