BEWARE: 'Diving Bell' will be a major foreign-lingo rival at Oscars

July 12, 2007 | 10:43 am

Pay attention to "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," which has its North American premiere at the Toronto filmfest in September - it will probably be one of the biggest foreign-language players at the next Academy Awards. Miramax just signed up topnotch campaigners 42 West ("Crash," "The Queen") to ring its Oscar bell, which should be easy. Celebrated artiste Julian Schnabel just won best director at Cannes for this real paraplegic-discovers-the-meaning-of-life story that looks a helluvalot like "The Sea Inside," which won best foreign film for Spain two years ago. This one's set in France, the story of the editor of Elle, portrayed by Mathieu Amalric, a potential nominee for best actor. Here's the French-language trailer. (Beware: Rated R.)
