Gutsy Emmy Judge #1 DARES to predict 5 best-comedy nominees

July 1, 2007 |  8:37 pm

Based upon his appraisal of the 10 sample episodes evaluated this weekend at Emmy screenings, one judge believes that these five contenders should make the final lineup for best comedy series: "Desperate Housewives," "Entourage," "30 Rock," "Two and a Half Men" and "Ugly Betty." 5predix1"'30 Rock' and '2.5 Men' are locks," he insists. "'Scrubs' doesn't have a chance in hell. I would be shocked if 'Earl' and 'Office' made it. 'Housewives' really could have made it easy, but they really f**ked up with that submission. Comedy series, anyone? There is no excuse. I mean if they were going to give a dramatic sampling, why wouldn't they submit 'Bang'? 'Housewives' blows it again. They still might make it considering how bad 'Earl,' 'Scrubs,' 'Office,' 'Entourage' and 'Weeds' did picking their tapes. 'Extras' was very refreshing given the lineup, though I still wouldn't count on it cracking the top five." CLICK HERE to Continue Reading!

"'30 Rock' would win with that tape," he continues. "Watch out for that show. That's all I have to say. Haha. I wasn't really even that much of a fan before today." The problem with predicting the Emmy nominees based upon opinions of sample episodes is that that's not the sole factor used in determining final contenders. Academy accountants will now take judges' scores and mix them on a 50-50 basis with results of the original popular vote of TV academy members. That means that "The Office" could still make the final five if it scored highly in the popular vote, thus offsetting the low score it may have received from this and other judges. This judge clarifies the episodes submitted by producers of "My Name Is Earl" and "Two and a Half Men." "'Earl' was the episode with Christian Slater," he says. "Earl goes green and wants to return Christian's air conditioner. '2.5 Men' is the episode where Jake gets boobs and Charlie is dating a woman who is the younger version of his mother and everyone sees it but him."

Housewives submitted it takes two, the guy is saying that they should have submitted bang

Housewives sent Bang?
Not It Takes Two?

Everywhere I see it says they've sent It Takes Two

rescue me for best comedy

I agree, Joe. How I Met Your Mother should definitely be here and I think would have wowed the judges with "Slap Bet."

There should be categories for series based on length, because it is more than obvious to me that Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives should never be in this category. They are both campy, amusing shows but they give actors and writers twice as much time to impress judges, but not comedies.

How I Met Your Mother would be in this category if not for the hour long shows. "Robin Sparkles" was one of the best half hours on TV this season. Slap bet, anyone?

Oh, "My Name is Earl"! That's not a bad episode per se, but far, far, far from their best of the season. Even if they didn't pick "The Trial," surely there were tons better than that. Were they hoping to appeal to liberal Hollywooders with a topical selection (global warming scares the bejesus out of Earl)?

I'm starting to feel better about the 50/50 split. If the other judges were as down on "The Office" episode as this one, I'm glad the show still probably ranks high in the popular vote (possibly #1). The idea of "Two and a Half Men" and "Desperate Housewives" making it in before "The Office" scares the bejesus out of me!

I am glad to hear about "30 Rock," though, and I hope that "Scrubs" went over better with the other judges.
