Can weak 'Heart' be restarted for an Oscar run?

July 6, 2007 |  8:59 am

Variety is reporting that Paramount Vantage is cutting the number of screens showing 'A Mighty Heart' in half to 650 this weekend in the hopes that a more limited release will generate much-needed word of mouth. While the biopic got great reviews with many critics calling the performance of Angelina Jolie as war widow Mariane Pearl Oscar-worthy, it has pulled in only $7.6 million after two weeks in wide release. After failing to cash in on Jolie's celebrity, the studio now hopes that a longer theatrical run in fewer theaters will boost the box office. Couple that with a fall DVD release and the thinking is that Jolie and company could figure in the year-end awards derby.

My vote for Best Actress goes to Marion Cotillard for La Mome. Her performance blows Angelina Jolie's performance for A Mighty Heart totally out of the water. There's really no competition there.
