Pundits' scorecard: Who had most correct predix? (Hint: Me! SNAP!)
Here's how our three groups of Emmy experts - two actual voters, 10 TV journalists and our two distinguished forum moderators - fared predicting the nominees. The two Emmy judges scored a perfect 5/5 predicting the nominees for best comedy series and 4/5 for drama. None of us, including them, thought "Boston Legal" would beat out Emmy champs "24" and "Lost" for that fifth slot.
Our TV journo pundits were: Marc Berman, Mediaweek; Robert Bianco, Hollywood Reporter; Hal Boedeker, Orlando Sentinel; Michele Greppi, TV Week; Tom O'Neil, Gold Derby, TheEnvelope.com; Ray Richmond, Hollywood Reporter; Matt Roush, TV Guide; Mo Ryan, Chicago Tribune; Diane Werts, Newsday; and David Zurawik, Baltimore Sun
Overall, we were correct with 214 of our 288 predictions for a score of 74 percent. I had the highest score: 25 of 30, Matt Roush of TV Guide had 24 right, and both Marc Berman of Mediaweek and David Zurawik of the Baltimore Sun scored 23.
Our forum moderators: Robert "Rob L" Licuria had 24 correct of 30 predix, Chris "Boomer" Beachum reaped 22. Both were tripped up by the drama series nominees as they hoped for the return of "Lost," a repeat by "24," and a nod for newcomer "Friday Night Lights." However, they, like the Emmy judges, predicted a repeat nomination for "Two and a Half Men." They also did well with the acting categories, each scoring a perfect 5 for comedy actress with Rob getting 5 right in the drama actress category as well.
Here is how the pro pundits fared in each category:
DRAMA SERIESWhile nine of us thought "The Sopranos" would get its seventh consecutive series nomination, no one predicted that "Boston Legal" would get its first. Rather, eight of us were rooting for newcomer "Friday Night Lights" and seven thought 2005 winner "Lost" would find itself back in the race after last year's snub. Seven of us did see freshman series "Heroes" making the cut while six of us predicted "House" would repeat as a nominee and five felt "Grey's Anatomy" would do the same.
Overall score: 27/46 predictions correct
Leaders: Roush, Zurawik (4/5)
COMEDY SERIESAll but one of us thought newcomers "30 Rock" and "Ugly Betty" would make the grade and eight of us hoped last year's winner, "The Office," would repeat. Six of us thought "Entourage" would get a nod, continuing HBO's excellent track record in this category. The only surprise, "Two and a Half Men," would not have been if we had looked to the predictions of both the Emmy judges and the forum moderators.
Overall score: 36/44 predictions correct
Leaders: Berman, Bianco, O'Neil, Richmond, Roush, Ryan, Werts (4/5)
DRAMA ACTOREveryone predicted the return of Hugh Laurie to this category after last year's snub and 9 of us saw three-time winner James Gandolfini returning as well after being overlooked last year.
However, six of us thought Michael C. Hall of Dexter would make the cut while 5 of us were rooting for Kyle Chandler of "Friday Night Lights." Only four foresaw last year's winner, Kiefer Sutherland, returning and a mere three of us predicted the return of Denis Leary, a nominee last year. Special mention must be made of the prognosticating powers of Marc Berman and forum moderator Chris Beachum, the only pundits to predict the return of 2005 winner James Spader of "Boston Legal."
Overall score - 27/50 predictions correct
Leaders: Berman, O'Neil, Richmond (4/5)
DRAMA ACTRESSEveryone forecast the return of three-time winner Edie Falco after being snubbed last year and nine of us predicted a second consecutive nomination for Kyra Sedgwick. (If only she had read our report, she would not have been so surprised this morning!) Freshman series stars Sally Field and Minnie Driver got 8 and 7 votes respectively. However, only 3 of us saw last year's winner Mariska Hargitay returning and a mere two thought 2005 winner Patricia Arquette would make it into this crowded field of six nominees.
Overall score: 39/50 predictions correct
Leaders: O'Neil, Roush (5/6)
COMEDY ACTOREveryone predicted Alec Baldwin would make the cut while nine of us saw Steve Carell repeating. Seven predicted the return of both last year's winner Tony Shalhoub and first-time nominee Charlie Sheen. However, only 2 of us thought Ricky Gervais would get in for "Extras."
Overall score - 35/48 predictions correct
Leader: Zurawik (5/5)
COMEDY ACTRESSThe small field of prospects meant we all did well. Everyone predicted America Ferrara, 9 of us had Tina Fey, last year's winner Julia Louis- Dreyfus, and Mary Louise Parker in the race and 8 foresaw the return of 2005 champ Felicity Huffman.
Overall score - 45/50 predictions correct
Leaders: Berman, Bianco, Boedeker, O'Neil, Richmond, Roush (5/5)

With the suprise over Boston Legals wierd nomination....The biggest suprise to me (and I wish Tom or Boomer would address)...Where did this MASS MASS MASS support for Starter Wife come from. I was under the impression that it was light summer fare...although cute....still light. Nominations in all the major categories...WOW!!!
