Emmy Judge #1's view: Socko entries by '2 1/2 Men' & '30 Rock'

July 1, 2007 |  7:03 pm

Twohalfmen"'Two and a Half Men' and '30 Rock' really nailed their submissions — the place went nuts," an Emmy judge reports on a panel weighing comedy episodes. (One sample is submitted by all Top 10 finalists.) "Can't say the same about 'Weeds,' 'The Office,' 'My Name is Earl' and most of all 'Scrubs.' I don't understand what the hell 'The Office' and 'Earl' were thinking."

Turns out "Earl" did not submit "The Trial" episode, as we had presumed. It's unclear what producers did submit. Still waiting to hear back from that judge with more details. Also, we don't know what episode of "Men" he's referring to.

We do know that he's referring specifically to these other episodes: The Office ("The Coup") Scrubs ("My Musical") Thirty Rock ("Hard Ball") Weeds ("Cooking with Jesus"). It's a shockeroo that "My Musical" is going over so poorly with this judge. TV critics gushed over it earlier this year, but it's gimmicky: a patient imagines the hospital staff performing musical song-and-dance numbers. "The Coup" was well received by critics, too — Steve Carell's character Michael imagines that Dwight is scheming to take over his job when Michael gets in trouble for showing movies to the staff.

Yesterday (Saturday) the drama panel powwow lasted more than 10 frustrating hours. Judges chose not to break for lunch, but rather to eat while the viewing marathon continued, often painfully. "I gave my number one vote to 'Lost,'" our source said. "It was by far and away the best thing in the room in my opinion, followed by 'Grey's Anatomy.' I didn't think I was going to be able to make it through 'Rome.' That show is absolutely stroke inducing. A minute more and I would have cracked."

(NOTE: These reports come to us unsolicited. We pass them along when we know the sources to be usually credible, but information is unofficial and unverified. We stress that this is merely one person's opinion and may not reflect the group's consensus. Also, we do not encourage judges to break any agreement of confidentiality that they may have made with ATAS.)

Are the judges brain damaged? Where's "The Wire?"

Why in God's name is the WIRE on HBO never nominated for an Emmy when it is clearly the best show on television?

I just don't understand how this works...or does'nt work? Is this beucase of it's relatively small audience? Lack of Promotion dollars?

Please give me some insight into this...

Thanks!

the scrubs musical ep was painful for me.

i was so embarrassed for the actors and writers on that show during that episode...i has been an avid fan of scrubs since the pilot originally aired but My Musical is what turned me off the show entirely. it was so awful, in my opinion.

i would hate for the office to get snubbed because of a bad submission choice. personally, i liked the coup, though i agree it wasn't their strongest ep this season. the office has been consistently funny, and i'd hate to see it lose a spot to something like desperate housewives or two and a half men.

All Emmy judges signed an affidavit that included the following: "In order to protect the identity of the candidates in the category I have screened, I affirm that I will not divulge them to anyone."

"My Musical" is just not that funny. The idea of a musical episode is not a new one and the songs that were written are not terribly clever. It would not surprise me at all if it doesn't get nodded.

I just can't imagine the Scrubs musical ep not getting nominated. It was genius.

I think the 30 Rock ep is a shoe-in, too.

You're a little off in your description of the "Scrubs" episode. The patient does indeed imagine the hospital staff in a musical, but it doesn't have anything to do with "The Wizard of Oz." There was an "Oz"-inspired episode last season - they submitted it and were nominated in last year's race.

Otherwise, awesome reporting! Keep it coming!

Perhaps Two and A Half Men switch to the Christmas Party episode. That was by far the funniest episode of the year in my view.
