TV critics' award winnahs: 'Friday Night Lights' & 'Sopranos' (of course)

July 22, 2007 | 11:45 am

While Gold Derby posted the news of TCA award winners as they were announced live at the Beverly Hilton, the Television Critics Association didn't bother featuring the winners' list on its own website till this morning! That's more than 8 hours after the trophies were bestowed by journalists who, apparently, 1.) don't consider their own awards newsworthy, 2.) don't take their jobs as journalists seriously or 3.) suddenly remembered the website through foggy hangovers earned after tossing back all those fruity drinks with Alec Baldwin and Masi Oka around the Hilton pool at the after-party.

But, wait! I shouldn't be so skeptical. This just in from TCA board member Aaron Barnhart of the Kansas City Star, who explains the reason for the oversight — CLICK HERE! (Or see blog item below.)

Program of the Year: "Heroes"
Outstanding Achievement in News and Information: "Planet Earth"
Outstanding Achievement in Movies and Miniseries: "Planet Earth"
Outstanding Achievement in Children's Programming: "Kyle XY" (ABC Family)
Tca_pull_quoteOutstanding New Program: "Friday Night Lights"
Career Achievement: Mary Tyler Moore
Outstanding Individual Achievement in Drama: Michael C. Hall, "Dexter
Outstanding Individual Achievement in Comedy: Alec Baldwin, "30 Rock"
Outstanding Achievement in Comedy: "The Office"
Outstanding Achievement in Drama: "The Sopranos"
Heritage Award: "Sopranos"

I asked a TCA member who writes for one of America's most powerful newspapers what she thought of the award results. She rolled her eyes and harrumphed about how ridiculous it is giving "Planet Earth" awards that seem so inconsistent: "It can't be both a news show and a miniseries, can it, really?"

By the way, please note what program did not win anything: "The Wire." Oooops, wait! It's never won an award — ever — from these TV critics who love to bash the Emmys for failing to hail its greatness. At the TCA cocktail reception, several members got angry at me for pointing out this hypocrisy. When they were done fuming about what idiots the Emmys are for failing to nominate it this year, I pointed out that TCA did the same. They looked at me with fury, grumbled a few words, spun around on their heels and marched away.

Oh, yeah, TCA still hasn't honored "Battlestar Galactica" either, but at least that's still on TV — there's still hope (ahem). Read more about TCA snubs — CLICK HERE.

PHOTO BELOW: "Sopranos" creator David Chase at the podium with his victorious team accepting the kudo for best drama. Later in the evening, when he accepted the Heritage prize, he turned to presenter, Alan Sepinwall of the Newark Star-Ledger, quipping, "You're from New Jersey. Will you tell these people that it's possible to be sitting in a restaurant in New Jersey and everything just stops!" Then he said he'd like to comment on the "Sopranos" ending by revealing that he, frankly, never understood the last scene of a certain film classic: "When I was 23 years old and still in college, I saw 'Planet of the Apes' with my wife. Afterwards, I said, 'See! They have a Statue of Liberty, too!'"

You forgot to mention The Office's win for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy.

Tom, you forgot to mention The Office's win for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy

Losah!

I emailed this to Tom O'Neil:

Tom, I take full responsibility for that. I crashed the server last
night while uploading a ginormous file of the audio feed of the TCA
Awards to the site so that our members could quote the winners'
speeches accurately in their stories.

However, I don't expect people to go to the TCA Website for their TCA
Awards news. I expect my readers to go to TV Barn. And what did I
have TypePad post there automatically the moment the copy embargo
ended but this:

http://blogs.kansascity.com/tvbarn/2007/07/brilliant-insig.html

So, you're free to make of it what you will. But the reality is that
our web assistant tried in vain to post the thing last night at the
embargoed time ... that members all received the press release in
advance and so were able to craft their stories before the ceremony
... and that I have an unparalleled ability to bring web servers to
their knees.

(P.S. I voted for "The Wire.")

Too funny! I had also visited the TCA web-page this morning looking for a list of the winners, and having no luck, was wondering if the event was cancelled! Your comments on "Heroes" and "Planet Earth" are dead-on. Funny how these same 200 critics have spent the past week complaining about the lack of integrity in the Television Academy's Awards Process. Physician, heal thyself!
