Tonys 2008: 'Cry-Baby' smiles on Broadway
Can another John Waters movie be spun into Broadway musical gold? Following up on the success of "Hairspray," winner of eight Tony Awards in 2003, "Cry-Baby" is now being turned into a tuner. The 1990 celluloid version starred Johnny Depp as a bad boy who won over good girls by shedding a single tear. Though no casting has been announced, the creative team is in place.
The show is being written by Broadway vets Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, Tony winners for their "Hairspray" book, with newcomers David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger turning out music and lyrics. Javerbaum has won seven Emmys as writer and exec producer of "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" while Schlesinger is an Oscar nominated composer ("That Thing You Do!") and bassist for the band Fountains of Wayne.
Mark Brokaw ("The Constant Wife") will helm while Tony winner Rob Ashford ("Thoroughly Modern Millie") handles choreography. The show is set for a six-week tryout this fall at the La Jolla Playhouse and will come into town next spring.
