Call the Emmy cops! Pavarotti's statuette for sale on EBay
Never mind that this sale is in such bad taste. Music icon Luciano Pavarotti died just days ago, and already someone's selling what appears to be the Daytime Emmy statuette he won in 1979-80 for a performance in Ponchielli’s "La Gioconda." I have no idea if the trophy is real. Just spotted the offering on EBay. But, if so, I do know that the sale is illegal. The Emmys have a rule similar to the Oscars forbidding the commercial trafficking of showbiz gold. All Oscar statuettes won after 1950 can't be sold. Cut-off date for the Emmys is much later, 1977, the year that the original TV academy split into two separate, warring organizations (long story, don't ask). But the Emmys don't have a gang of ruthless samurai lawyers who ambush violators, like the Oscars do. So maybe this seller will get away with this. Current bid price: $6,759.99. Sale ends this Emmy Sunday. TO FOLLOW THE DRAMA, CLICK HERE
