Even Spader was surprised at win
James Spader was the last in a jaw-dropping series of acting winners at tonight's awardsfest. He got off a nice shot about the unusual in-the-round seating before admitting he did not know who voted for the Emmy winners. And with his surprise third win for the part of Alan Shore, first on "The Practice" and then on "Boston Legal," he is not the only one wondering who decides these awards.
In the Forums, there was much discussion about this win. As the spotless mind wrote, "Holy cow, Kelley did it again. I love Spader, but Laurie should've had that one." And for Joe Dude, "How the hell they couldn't give that to James Gandolfini is just unbelievable. I thought I was speechless when Heigl won. Wow."
"Ugly Betty" star America Ferrara completed the kudos trifecta, winning best actress in a comedy series after already picking up the Golden Globe and SAG Award earlier this year.
In a sweet speech, she said it was "amazing when your dreams come true." And our Forum posters were pleased with this one. As True Tenor wrote, "Yay for Ferrera! Finally, something we all could expect ... She is probaby one of the most deserving winners tonight."

THANK YOU to those commenters who have already posted. The ONLY reason I was surprised that James Spader won is that so often, the one who DOES deserve it is passed over. Spader won, fair and square, because he DESERVED to. And what is all the shock anyway? It's not even the first time he's won it for this same role. If more people would wise up and actually WATCH Boston Legal (one of the best shows on TV in a LONG while), there would be much less of this "upset" talk. I'm not going to try to put down any of the other actors in the category...of course they are all great, or they wouldn't have been nominated. But how ANYONE could have the nerve to try to deny Spader of the worthiness of his win...that's nuts. The guy is amazing. Tony Soprano plays a great thug, but I'd like to see any of those actors try to pull off some of the incredible monologues that Spader does in the context of trying a case...he's sharp, pompous, brave, witty, and oftentimes he can bring you to tears. And don't even get me started on his many poignant moments OUT of the courtroom...some of those closing scenes with Shatner on the balcony are some of the best I've seen anywhere. Hilarious, profound...and often heartbreaking. I wish that entire show would take the award...it MORE than deserves it. You go, BOSTON LEGAL! Your fans LOVE YOU and we want to see more "upsets" like this next year!!!!! Bill took it once...I think it's Candice's turn next!!!

I totally agree with Lisa!!! Don't forget that Spader has been a great movie actor long before he ever hit the TV screen, and has been a fantasic character actor. He is a MIGHTY FORCE to be reckoned with and will be winning award after award as long as there are people out there who admire TRUE presence, grace, and charisma. RIGHT ON JIMMY!!!!!!!!
