Will 'Idol' become Emmy's biggest loser at creative arts gala tonight?

September 8, 2007 | 11:06 am

Tonight it can finally happen. TV's most popular program, "American Idol," may become the biggest loser in the history of TV's top award when the Emmys decide 75 categories at its creative arts ceremony. "Idol" competes in 5 and currently has racked up 22 losses, no wins. Currently, the record for biggest shutout is held by "Newhart" with 25.

"Late Night with Conan O'Brien" is up for only 2 awards tonight. With 21 past snubs, it can't tie or overtake "Newhart." That will probably occur next Sunday on big Emmy night when "Late Night" is up for two more (variety series and writing) and will probably get skunked twice.

Meantime, I strongly suspect that "Idol" will win something tonight. It's gotta take the category for best picture editing for a series series, don't you think? The "Idol Gives Back" special was submitted to judges in this matchup. How can voters not reward its editors for so successfully bringing back Elvis from the grave to croon that chilling duet with Celine Dion?

Bill Maher doesn't have any noms tonight. When he loses both of his races next Sunday (variety series, writing), he'll become Emmy's biggest personal loser, with 19 defeats. That will surpass Angela Lansbury's record of 18. But she'll still remain the biggest loser among performers. Maher's noms are a mix of producing, writing and performing.

Another interesting race tonight: best special class program. That's the grab-bag category where they put everything that doesn't fit into other slots. This year it's an award-nut's dream considering that the Golden Globes telecast is nominated for its first Emmy ever and competes against the Oscars (Ellen DeGeneres was pretty lame as host, remember) and the Tonys.

But all eyes will be on tonight's race for best original music and lyrics, which features Justin Timberlake's and Andy Samberg's notorious "D**k in a Box" schtick from "Saturday Night Live." By the way, it looks like negotiations died behind the scenes to have them perform a censored version of it next Sunday. If Justin can't sing about his "junk," then he just junks the whole thing — that's that.

Yes.

This is where Kathy Griffin stood up and said some things that I shall not repeat here last year?
