Can 'Atonement' score two Oscar noms for supporting actress?

October 16, 2007 |  2:19 pm

"Completely empty!" is how Stephen Holt of AwardsDaily.com and "The Stephen Holt Show" described Oscar's supporting actress race when I ran into him in Manhattan last week. Therefore, he believes there's a strong possibility that both Saoirse Ronan and Vanessa Redgrave could be nominated as the young and old Brionny in "Atonement." (Kinda like Kate Winslet andAtonement Gloria Stuart both being nommed for portraying young and old Rose in "Titanic," except, in their case, Winslet was in the lead race and Stuart in supporting.)

Citing info pooled by a poster named Pierre de Plume, Stephen notes that, since categories were created for supporting stars in 1936, there were 27 occasions when costars from the same film were nominated in the same slot. Usually, two, of course, but once there were three actresses competing: in 1963 when Diane Cilento, Joyce Redman and Edith Evans all scored bids for "Tom Jones."

Six times one of those nominees won, thus surmounting the belief that costars cancel each other out.

1971: Cloris Leachman won (Ellen Burstyn also nominated), "The Last Picture Show"
1973: Tatum O'Neal (Madeline Kahn), "Paper Moon"
1979: Meryl Streep (Jane Alexander), "Kramer vs. Kramer"
1982: Jessica Lange (Teri Garr), "Tootsie"
1994: Dianne Wiest (Jennifer Tilly), "Bullets Over Broadway"
2002: Catherine Zeta-Jones (Queen Latifah), "Chicago"

Surveying this year's derby, Stephen adds, "Of course, if Romola Garai is in it, too, for 'Atonement' that would make three. Or if Keira Knightley was put in supporting, which is insane. However, none of the 'Tom Jones' girls won that year. It went to another great Brit, Dame Margaret Rutherford for 'The V.I.P's.' if memory serves. BUT 'Tom Jones' won for Best Picture that year and so did Tony Richardson for best director, Vanessa's late first husband and father of Natasha and Joely, as I'm sure you know."

Hey, in 1947 there were 2 nominees for Best Supporting Actress from the film Gentleman's Agreement, and Celeste Holm ended up winning against her costar Anne Revere.

Just thought I'd tell you you missed one. =)

Jennifer Garner for Juno will be nominated. Fantastic performance with 2 POWERHOUSE scenes, while still being a quiet performance. It's her best film work.
EW.com has already called for a nomination for her after its screening at TIFF.

There is no way that Knightley will be put into supporting. The Lead Actress race is WIDE OPEN and like I posted on imdb.com, there are 5 empty spots. Each actress has a con that will hurt their chances and not one is a "lock"...Here are some examples:

Knightley-As much screentime to be considered supporting, and nothing showy, but she has the momentum
Cotillard-Her film wasn't picked for the Foreign Language race and the only thing special about the movie is her performance..Also it came out in Spring
Christie-The film was pretty small, but she's the closest thing to a lock...An early summer film too
Kidman-Getting raves, but the film is not
Blanchett-See Kidman
Foster- Film bombed at the BO. Enough said
Jolie- The film came out in June, but the puplicity she gets from the pap. might just kill her chances. Call it over exposure for the wrong thing.
Adams- To Disney? If the film is good (Which I've heard) and she is amazing (Which I've heard she is) it will all rely on the BO.
Russell- A nice film. Nothing con about it really, but it was released in early May
Linney-Her film is being released a little to late, but that could go either way
Page- The early rave from Ebert might just be the best thing she has. She will get nommed tho.

Holt is loopy... I think Atonement will get Best Picture and I do think it will get at least one supporting actress nom, but no way it gets three. I think there are a lot of other possibilities in the supporting actress field like Meryl STreep in Lions for Lambs, Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone, and if Cate Blanchett gets put there for I'm Not There, she'll be the frontrunner. After all, she won her last one from playing a real-life person.

Catherine Keener for INTO THE WILD.

Michelle Pfeiffer, HAIRSPRAY!

I just wrote this at Kris Tapley's blog, but I insist Salma Hayek should be there for "Lonely Hearts". Too bad the movie was so badly handled.

Tx, Kamila. Fixed now.

Would anyone be offended if I said it doesn't matter because Cate the Great has already won?

Tom, it's Romola Garai.

What about Garai chances? Do you think she can be nominated?
