Golden Globes declare 'Charlie Wilson,' 'Savages' & 'Margot' comedies
"Charlie Wilson's War," "The Savages," "Margot at the Wedding," "Juno," "Darjeeling Limited," "Waitress" and
"Lars and the Real Girl" will compete in the comedy/musical categories at the Golden Globes, according to decrees made by the eligibility committee of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. All of those films have a mix of comedic and dramatic elements so there was speculation that they might be classified as dramas. "I'm Not There," which includes lots of Bob Dylan music, has been deemed a drama.
In the TV races, some series that straddled classification have been decided, too: "Pushing Daisies," "Californication," "Chuck," "Psych," "Samantha Who" and "Reaper" will compete as comedies.
In the race for best animated feature: "Bee Movie," "Beowulf," "Happily N'ever After," "Meet the Robinsons," "Ratatouille," "Shrek the Third," "The Simpson's Movie," "Surf's Up," and "TMNT."
Sixty-one movies have landed in the category for best foreign-language film. CLICK HERE to see the list! (Among the foreign titles is "La Vie en Rose," whose star, Marion Cotillard, will compete in the race for best comedy/musical actress.)

Oops! Laura Linney is in Comedy, too! Will she OR Marion win there? But this leaves Julie Christie, Keira Knightley, Angelina Jolie and yes, Jodie Foster as the Actresses in Drama. And ALSO (drum roll) Cate Blanchett for "Elizabeth"!
Unless they decide to nominate Nicole(they always do for SOMEthing, ANYthing) for "Golden Compass"!
Oh those wild and wacky HFPA-ers!

Um, Stephen, you clearly didn't notice that The Savages has been classified by HFPA as a comedy too, so Linney and Cotillard will be competing against each other. The drama category looks like a virtually free ride for Julie Christie... with Angelina Jolie as an outside bet.
I agree that putting Cotillard in comedy/musical is ridiculous - and I felt the same about Jamie Foxx, Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon (and even, going way back, Sissy Spacek). Even if the actor does do their own singing, a dramatic performance should compete in the dramatic category. Simple as that.
I'm not even sure Cotillard is assured a win here - Amy Adams, Ellen Page or Linney could all upset, depending on who gets the preliminary awards momentum.

Can you also check whether "Talk to Me" is comedy or drama since Don Cheadle might be a contender in a comedy category?

Tom - Did the committee make final decisions on borderline lead/supporting situations. We are specifically wondering about John Travolta (Hairspray), Cate Blanchett (I'm Not There), Casey Affleck (Jesse James), Russell Crowe (American Gangster) who are campaigning for supporting but might be placed in lead by the Globes.

This is what I thought would happen. So it will be Marion Cotillard in the Musical category and
(fingers crossed) LAURA LINNEY in the Drama Actress category for the win! I see this as the HFPA trying to help Laura Linney. BRAVO!

Uuuu... Let's think:
did Jamie Foxx sing in Ray?? NO!! but he did win in comedy/musical category!
stop trashing brilliant Marion Cotillard.

is i'm not there going comedy or drama?

What about I'm not there? Is that going drama or comedy?
Posted by: Bernardo | November 29, 2007 at 12:15 PM
Of course Marion Cotillard is in comedy/musical because....the movie was a comedy? She really sang her own songs? None of the above?
Ridiculous and totally unfair to the real stars of comedies and musicals.

Are you serious??! Cotillard in Comedy/Musical!?!? That's horrible...no Golden Globe for Adams then...and the Drama actress race is officially boring as could be.
