SAG favors old favorites over new TV shows

Compared to the SAG Awards, the Golden Globes has always favored hot new TV shows and their stars new and this year was no exception. Of the 11 Globe nominated series, 5 are in their first season while 9 of the 22 lead acting nominees star on freshman entries.

In today's SAG nods, only 1 of the 10 nominated ensembles is on a brand new show ("Mad Men") while only 4 of the 20 nominated actors appear on first-year series. The one wrinkle with this comparison is that SAG does not consider any actors on TV to be supporting (though it does in film) so nominees Vanessa Williams ("Ugly Betty") and Jeremy Piven ("Entourage") are bumped up to lead.

Williams' promotion means that "Ugly Betty" ties "30 Rock" with 3 SAG nods while "The Sopranos," which was left out of the running at the Globes save for Edie Falco's nomination, leads on the drama side with 3 SAG nods as well. And an ensemble nod for "The Sopranos" means that all of last September's Emmy winners are competing at this year's SAG Awards as well.
