TRANSCRIPT: Our chat session with Jennifer Garner
"It would be so exciting to go and be part of a nominated film," Jennifer Garner told us about how she'd feel if "Juno" got nominated for best picture at the Oscars. We riffed with her during an online chat session — her first ever, she revealed while doing her own typing from an apartment in New York. She's in Manhattan appearing on Broadway in "Cyrano de Bergerac."
"Broadway is challenging and demanding, but nothing comes close to the 'Alias; work load," she confessed. Of all the various roles she's played, she said that Sydney in "Alias" is her fave. But how does she feel about failing to win a much-deserved Emmy for it? She was nominated four times.
"It's hard to get too upset about not winning an Emmy when you watch the other women who were nominated — Allison Janney? Come on — she is incredible," she said. "And Edie Falco? Amazing. I was happy to be on the list for so many years."
Jennifer Garner: Hey guys -- I am so excited to be here with you -- sorry to keep you waiting, naptime took longer than I expected. This is my first online chat, so bear with me. I'll get to everyone I can.
Tom O'Neil: How is 'Cyrano' going?
Jennifer Garner: I remember growing up and seeing live theatre--I love movies, but there is something like seeing a live play/musical
Tom O'Neil: Did you have any idea that 'Juno would be such a monster hit when you read the script?
Jennifer Garner: I knew that there was something special about Diablo's script, but you can never really know how a movie will turn out or whether people will respond
ekkagirl: You are my Hero Jen You Saved my Life Thank you I am Violently Ill and watching Alias and your movies everyday always made me Smile and got me through Shocking Pain I hope you win a Sag Award
Jennifer Garner: I'm so sorry to hear that you aren't well and happy that Alias has helped a bit. Good luck and get better soon
Tom O'Neil: With awards season coming, will you be able to do the rounds? Attend the ceremonies?
Jennifer Garner: I know--I'm so happy for Jason Reitman and Ellen and Diablo
BTN: what is your opinion on the strike?
Jennifer Garner: The strike makes me sad because I have so many friends who are crew members and out of work. I hope it is resolved soon. It is a tricky thing to figure out, but important conversations to have.
Jennifer Garner: What do you guys think about the strike?
nthdegreelove: its sad
washpubdef: I support the writers, but the strike sucks! I miss my fave shows!
eurocheese: I think the writers deserve to be paid, and the studios are making themselves look
mlsenn: I support the writers, but I want it resolved as soon as possible. It seems like it hurts everyone, not just the writers, but crew, local business owners, and others connected to the business.
Brazilian_Fan: JEN, DO YOU KEEP A friendship WITH THE ALIAS'S CAST???? GARBER OR VARTAN???
Jennifer Garner: The Alias cast and crew are all still ridiculously close. I speak to Victor and Ron every week, at least, and Michael is a good text messenger
Tom O'Neil: JENNIFER - MANY OF US AWARD NUTS ARE STILL UPSET THAT YOU DIDN'T WIN AN EMMY, ESPECIALLY THAT FIRST YEAR WHEN YOU GAVE JUDGES THE 90-MINUTE PILOT. WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT THE EMMYS?
Jennifer Garner: It's hard to get too upset about not winning an Emmy when you watch the other women who were nominated--Allison Janney? Come on--she is incredible. And Edie Falco? Amazing. I was happy to be on the list for so many years
fedy: did you connect well with your partners of Juno?
Jennifer Garner: Working with Allison was one of my favorite parts of Juno. Doesn't she just kill you--don't you want her to be your mom?
lynne gross: Was the chemistry as good off screen as on with Ellen Page?
Jennifer Garner: Ellen was so low key and low maintenance while we were shooting and then the cameras would roll and she would just turn into this pregnant girl. It was amazing to watch
Jennifer Garner: You guys are too nice to me. Where are the tough questions?
corinne916: Are there any TV shows you would love to guest star on? Like Heroes with David Anders!! :) Or Big Shots with Michael?
Jennifer Garner: I didn't know David was on Heroes!! Good for him! I am so proud of him. Michael hasn't asked me to be on Big Shots with him, yet. Somebody give him a call
Tom O'Neil: OK HERE'S A TOUGH QUESTION -- IF YOU AND JANNEY BOTH GET NOMMED BY SAG FOR 'JUNO' WILL YOU SQUARE OFF IN A SMACKDOWN?? ;) :)
Jennifer Garner: I've had smack downs with Janney before and come out all beaten up
Tom O'Neil: OUCH
Jennifer Garner: I'm here, just slowwwww. Hunting and pecking
Jennifer Garner: Aren't you guys influenced by what you see is already winning--do you watch the movies that have less heat?
Tom O'Neil: THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION, JENNIFER -- AND THE ANSWER IS YES, YES, YES
Lizzie B: How is Martha Stewart the dog?
Jennifer Garner: She is the best. We had to leave her in LA and cannot wait to get home to her. I hope she isn't mad at me
Brazilian_Fan: JEN, HOW ABOUT ALIAS - THE MOVIE????? IT'S MY DREAM TO SEE SYD IN ACTION AGAIN!!!
Jennifer Garner: A movie of Alias--Ask JJ
Tom O'Neil: I THINK IT'LL BE NOMMED FOR BEST PIC AT THE OSCARS
Jennifer Garner: It would be so exciting to go and be part of a nominated film
silvia: what do you like better drama or comedy?
Jennifer Garner: I like both and am happy that I get to go back and forth between drama and comedy
Jennifer Garner: I'm here, freaking out and sweating and trying to keep up with you people
Tom O'Neil: you're doing GREAT
moviebuff: you're doing great!
Steve Kwant: Giver her room guys :-)
bob: No worries Jen...this HAS to be easier than being a mom!
moviebuff: say hi MOVIEBUFF! it would just be cool for you to say my SN!
Jennifer Garner: Hi MOVIEBUFF
GarnerWatch: Hey Jen, what do you think of fans that pass and simply wave and say 'Hi' on the street? Annoying or do you enjoy it?
Jennifer Garner: I love fans that say hi on the street. Makes my day
hilary: How did you pick Violet's name?
Jennifer Garner: Violet was my grandmother's name
mlsenn: What projects do you have coming up?
Jennifer Garner: 2 movies--both comedies
Tom O'Neil: would you ever do Broadway again? It's gotta be grueling
Jennifer Garner: Broadway is challenging and demanding, but nothing comes close to the Alias work load. I'd love to do a play again if the right one came my way
siowafc: What do you prefer doing? Kick-butt, action roles like in 'Alias' or 'The Kingdom' or more intimate role like in 'Juno'?
Jennifer Garner: I like going back and forth between different types of roles. the action ones make a part of me happy, but I would be miserable if that's all I got to do.
GarnerWatch: Jen, would you ever consider doing a TV-series again, or do you prefer movies/broadways now?
Jennifer Garner: I would do a TV series, someday. It is all about how it fits into my life and so who knows? movies are easier, except for moving to different locations all of the time
jennifer jen-fan: Hi Jen, I'm from Belgium, you're the best ! Will you be back in Europe soon, for a Juno's premiere maybe ? (sorry for my English)
Jennifer Garner: I don't think we are going to Europe with Juno--sorry!
Steve Kwant: Yes, tell us about Vandalia
Jennifer Garner: Vandalia was one of the original names for West Virginia and is the name of my production company. We have maybe 10 projects in development and I love it
Tom O'Neil: HAVE YOU DONE ANY Q&A SCREENINGS WITH JUNO? OR HAS YOUR B'WAY SKED PROHIBITED THAT?
Jennifer Garner: I have only been able to do a few Q and A's for Juno because the play takes up every night
valentina-italian: is there a role of the past that you would have kill to play?
Jennifer Garner: There is an old movie that I am trying to get re-made, but I don't have the rights, yet, so I can't say. I would have to sing, though--yeesh!
Iisis: What has been your favorite role in your career so far?
Jennifer Garner: Sydney has to be my favorite role
sharfox: If you weren't an actress, what would you be doing? (other than being a mom)
Jennifer Garner: I never thought about acting for a living--I always assumed that I would be in community theater for my whole life while I had a 'real' job
lynne gross: Jen , you and ALIAS, got me through the most trying times of my life. My girlfriend died of cancer, and watching ALIAS and you on entertainment shows really helped take my mind to a better place.
Jennifer Garner: I'm sorry about your girlfriend, Lynn
lynne gross: Thanks, Jen
BTN: do you have any regrets on a role you took or didn't take?
Jennifer Garner: There are lots of things that don't turn out the way you imagine they will, but every movie, or show, or play is a risk and so I have no regrets
siowafc: Alias was one of the first shows I loved as a teenager. What films/TV series most influenced you as an actress while you were growing up?
Jennifer Garner: I loved going to see theatre as a kid and didn't see a lot of movies
mlsenn: Would you ever consider directing like your husband has tried?
Jennifer Garner: Directing is hard core. I think I will leave it to Ben.
ArianaG.: jen, how do you feel about being a role model for young woman? I know that you are someone who I look up to a lot and I wanted to thank you for being such a great person who I can look up to
Jennifer Garner: Thanks, Ariana. I am happy to be a role model as long as no one expects me to be perfect.
aaron burgin: Is there any role you've turned down that you wish you would've said yes?
Jennifer Garner: I haven't turned down any roles that I have regretted--and if I did I've blissfully forgotten
Tom O'Neil: WHEN YOU'VE BEEN NOMINATED FOR AWARDS IN THE PAST, HAVE YOU PREPARED AN ACDCEPTANCE SPEECH - JUST IN CASE -- OR DO YOU WING IT?
Jennifer Garner: I have tried to prepare a speech when nominated and it doesn't work--my brain will not do it. So I've been lucky enough to wing it a couple of times
Teresa Horsnell UK: Do you still work out as much as you used to?
Jennifer Garner: I DO NOT work out as much as I used to. Now I work out to feel good
eurocheese: what was your favorite line from juno?
Jennifer Garner: favorite line from Juno changes every time I see it, but I think it is Michael Cera (I have the hugest crush on him) saying "I try really hard, actually."
eurocheese: all time favorite movie?
Jennifer Garner: Fave movie--don't laugh, because I mean it--Wizard of OZ.
Tom O'Neil: OZ = GREATEST. MOVIE. EVER.
