Coens tie Oscars' record by hitting a noms grand slam
Joel and Ethan Coen have equalled the record held by Warren Beatty as Oscar nominees in four separate categories in the same year. While they had won an Oscar for scripting "Fargo" and shared a nod for editing that film, Ethan had been the one to get the nod for producing "Fargo" while Joel got the directing nomination. This year the brothers share in all four of their nominations for "No Country for Old Men" — producing, directing, writing, and editing.
Beatty was a four-time nominee twice with producing, directing, acting and scripting nods for both "Heaven Can Wait" (1978) and "Reds" (1981); he won the directing Oscar for "Reds." Alan Menken had three nominations for the songs of "Beauty and the Beast" (1991) winning for the title tune as well as for his fourth nod that night for the film's score.
In addition, the Coens become only the third pair to share a directing nomination. Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins won the Oscar in 1961 for co-directing "West Side Story" while Beatty and Buck Henry lost their race for helming "Heaven Can Wait" to Michael Cimino for "The Deer Hunter."

HELLO!!!??? Orson Welles recieved 4 nominations for "Citizen Kane"!!! Picture, Actor, Dirctor and Writing!!!

If I may correct you, Mr O'Neil: the Coens equal the record held by Warren Beatty AND Roberto Benigni - don't forget that the Italian hyphenate got 4 nominations in 1999: Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay AND Best Foreign Language Film (which, remember, goes to the film's director rather than the producer - unlike Best Picture).
