Ellen vs. Julie at Canada's Genie Awards (Hey, where's 'Juno'?)

January 29, 2008 |  9:46 am

Eight days after the Oscars, Ellen Page will be competing against Julie Christie again for best actress. Next: at Canada's 28th annual Genie Awards. However, it won't be for her work in "Juno." Although that best-picture Oscar contender stars two Canadians (Page and Michael Cera), was helmed by a homegrown talent (Jason Reitman), and was filmed in British Columbia, funding for the film came solely from the USA, thus eliminating it from consideration for these Canuck kudos. Rather, Page was nommed for her turn in "The Tracey Fragments," an intense drama about lost youth. Two years ago, Page lost her supporting actress bid for "Wilby Wonderful" to Jennifer Jason Leigh ("Childstar").

With funding as the key criterion, the London-based "Eastern Promises" and the Rwandan drama "Shake Hands With the Devil" lead with 12 nominations apiece, including best picture. Oscar contender Viggo Mortensen, the star of "Promise," is a best actor nominee here as well. His competition includes Canadian veteran Gordon Pinsent, who plays Christie's understanding husband in "Away From Her," and and two-time Genie winner Roy Dupuis who stars in "Devil" as Canadian hero Romeo Dallaire, leader of the overwhelmed UN peacekeepers in Rwanda during the 1994 civil war.

Genie winning actress Sarah Polley picked up two noms - one that matched her Oscar nod for adapting Alice Munro's short story "Away From Her" and another for her helming debut. Among her competition in that category are six-time winner Denys Arcand ("Days of Darkness"), seven-time victor David Cronenberg ("Eastern Promises), one-time winner Bruce McDonald ("The Tracey Fragments"), and Gemini winning TV director Roger Spottiswoode ("Shake Hands With the Devil").

The awards will be handed out on Monday, March 3 in Toronto and broadcast on Canada's E! Network and IFC. For the full list of nominees CLICK HERE.

National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged they had funded a project with the US auto makers for the past five years. The NTSB covertly funded a project whereby the auto makers were installing black boxes in four wheel drive pickup trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash.

They were surprised to find in 49 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2% of fatal crashes were, "Oh, Shit!"

Only the state of Texas was different, where 89.3% of the final words were, "Hey Y'all, hold my beer and watch this!"
